Was wondering what's a good (high) temperature without any worries. Right now my card goes up to the 70s and i get paranoid. Not much of a computer person but since i see my CPU stay in the 50s and my card go up to the 70s i get iffy.

a safe gpu temp is 75c max, but even at 75c, i would be keeping an eye on the temp. ati uses less power than nvidia, it's questionable why your 5850 reaches up to the 70s. my gtx 295 (no oc) runs in the low 40s at idle and when i play crysis, it's always in the 60s, never reaches 70c. did you oc your gpu? does ati have a fan adjuster you can increase? what case are you using? are your fans all set to 100% via bios? |

no, safe GPU temps are like 85c
theyre even rated to run higher than that like 95c (not recommended) Your temp is fine if thats as high as it gets, if it goes higher turn the fan speed ^ |

i stand corrected, but i even think 85c is extremely high. i just played crysis over 5 hours straight, and mine never went over 70c, considering it's an intensive program. |

there is a lot of different things that play a part in ones temps, we can't compare out temps cause we dont' have exact duplicate systems, room temps are different, location of the case is different, etc,. etc.
but 85c is not extremely high at all, 100+ is extremely hot. |

Every system is different, I can play crysis all day with quad SLI and not get above 31C, but that is far from max temps.
If you use MSI afterburner you can control you max temps, because the chips on the 5850 can take a lot of heat, and be stable 100C + but the VRMs get hot, so keeping the GPU's temps down to 75 and under is a good practice on theese cards, when Overclocked under 70C is a good idea to keep the VRM's in check.

My Ultra doesn't even blink at ~100c (No artifacts or slow downs) Also don't recommend it though heh.
Unfortunately it got too hot one night when folding@home and brought the death of the card. At least, it's in the process of dying. |

Well the ATI Overdrive says that the fan is at 50%, and it's set to auto adjust. Should i enable manual and just bump it to 100%? Also pretty sure my card wasn't OCd.

I always run my gpu fan at 100%. You can definitely hear it, but it's not too bad to me. I even have the case open.

So far the highest it's gotten it's about 73-74, while playing Grid or Dirt2

Temps seem fine, don't use manual fan control.. If you do want to lower your temps use MSI afterburner, that way your machine will be just as quiet as now at idle, and it will kick the fans up, at your specified amount for a given temp... but your temps are fine.

Cool, thanks, also when i downloaded the full ATI Catalyst Control Center, i got a "Folding@home" that when launched it took me to a website to download it. What does it do, and do i need it? I deleted the shortcut from my desktop though, can't find it atm.

I fold but ati is not the best card for it.
Folding is a worldwide distributed computing effort conducted by Stanford University to understand how proteins assemble themselves. The real world applications of this research includes potential cures for diseases such as Alzheimer's, cancer, and Parkinson's. Nearly everyone's life has been touched by someone who has had one of these diseases or one of the many other diseases this research is aiming to cure. For more information, please see Stanford's Folding@Home website. |

you think thats bad my 9800gt superclocked can NOT run with out the side of the case removed and a 24 inch by 24 inch fan on high blowing on it, even then it gets up to 105C, idles at 73 at 100% (62c wit hthe 24x24 on it and still 103c on load)
it gets so hot i cant play half life 2/hl2ep1/hl2ep2 on high or medium, the memory overheats and some times even the core. no artifacts befor the screen frezzes and sound loops (i think the vram) or it just shuts off (the core??) and i have to restart.
for a 5000 card they dont get hot, you dont have to worry but they are "high" for that card but well withen the range of normal. make sure your fan on the case is moving and that its not 100F in your room like my...
intel celeron and gforce4mx (GAMING COMP HELL YA)
intel core 2 duo and 9800gt
that will mess you up
and make sure your cables and crap are out of the way O AND GET THE DUST OFF IT with the air cans
