Topic: ati 5850 vs gtx 470Posted: 05 Jun 2010 at 3:20pm |

I've read a couple reviews about these two cards, but i want help from the community. It seems that the gtx 470 does better with higher AA and AF, but it barely gets ahead of the ati 5850. Would a 5850 still be a better choice over the 470? The only thing i can think of that the 470 has going for it is the 1.2g of ram...

Not to change the topic, but I personally think you should go with a 5870 rather than the 5850... you get better performance of course but later on you can CF 2 5870's which almost goes toe to toe with a 480 and afterwards tri-cf the 5870's... I know its not what you had asked but... =)
But to answer your question more thoroughly, please refer to this topic:

Haha, thanks for that I would go with a 5870 but my resolution is only 1680x1050 so...it would be a waste of 100 dollars that I can't afford right now

single 5850 would be the choice, and it will overclock very well, if you want... yes 2 5850's also do very well. lol

That techspot review seems funky. Most other sites show the GTX 470 between a 5850 and 5870. Heres a recent bench done by Anand on the GTX 465, but look at the GTX 470's frames:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3745/nvidias-geforce-gtx-465/4 In most of those benchmarks the GTX 470 is on the heels of the 5870. If you can afford the extra 50$ I would grab the 470, it has higher minimum frames then the 5850 and it deals with increased AA better. 5850 is a great card but, if the extra $50 is in your budget I would go for the 470. |

Here is what I have learned about GPU reviews.
1. Any review that uses a built in benchmark, 100% do not take one word of that review as accurate. Nvidia for years has optimized their drivers to show extremely high numbers in the built in benchmarks.. I remember when Far Cry 2 benchmarks showed Nvidia as a clear winner, but when playing the game ATI cards show much better FPS.. But now ATI has stooped to Nvidias level and cheats on the benchmarks.. so neither card will show an accurate representation of real game play with the built in bench marks.
2. A lot of the reviews have no idea what they are doing hardware wise, so you will see reviewers with 975 CPU's with 133 B clocks... So any game that needs high B clock's, and the inherent speeds that come with it, will be skewed, same with RAM speeds, and timings, and the rest of the BIOS, you would be shocked to see some of the BIOS settings some reviewers are using.. lol
3. Software... same deal, I have seen reviews that have ATI catalyst AI off using multi cards..
4. In game settings, the games themselves.. Some reviewers use games that ATI cards shine at, or Nvidia cards do better at.. also they show resolutions and settings, like texture quality, AA, AF, DOF, ect that one card may do better at, than another... It is very easy to make a review that shows one card superior to another, some reviewers do it on purpose, some do it on accident..
So bottom line take the good reviews, especially the ones that test games you are interested in playing, at the resolution you will be playing, at the settings you wish to play, and average them out, and you should have a basic idea of what the card is capable of..
Hardware canucks has been doing some very good reviews lately, doing mostly what I said above that a good reviewer does.. But there still is flaws/discrepscies... He may take the most demanding 5 minutes of the game, and use that for his test, this one area also may shine for ATI, bit during the rest of the game Nvidia does better... so even with great testing, there still is a lot of gray area...

lol, well I am getting my GTX 470 this week, and will be testing the heck out of it... for the price the 5850 is hard to go wrong... the 470 is a good card, and for the money I still would go for the 5850 right now... especially with its low power draw, it does not take much of a power supply to run 2 of them.
but I really don't think you could go wrong, with either one.. it is not like you pick one, and the other one is going to be a lot better... some games will do better with 5850, some with the 470, but overall they are pretty darn close from what I have seen, so it is hard to spend the extra $$ for the 470, IMHO.. but like I said I am going to see what it can do, and see if there is a bottleneck that some of the reviewers might have missed...??/ Maybe Nvidia has some magical drivers coming down the road soon, it has happened with Nvidia and ATI before.

Problem with using actual gameplay is, its tough to replicate the same test. I think thats the strong side of benchmarks, while your actual gameplay experience may vary from a canned bench, even so, a canned bench is the most scientific form of testing. Trying to play 30min of BC2 and running fraps on 1 card, then doing it for the other won't give you fair/accurate results, simply because lots of diff things can happen in each of those 30min.
If you like Hardware Canucks, they also have a recent bench on the GTX 465: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/32669-evga-geforce-gtx-465-1gb-superclocked-review.html Again, pay attention to the GTX 470s numbers, for the extra 50$ it does seem like your getting a fair bit more performance, it does close in on the 5870 at times. Also note its minimum frames on the HC review. I mean if Justin is able to find a way to use real gameplay and make it able to be exactly replicated for both cards then that would be stellar. However, you usually can get a ballpark of the cards actual gaemplay performance by looking at various reviews and getting an average. I like [H]ardOCP, AnandTech, and HardwareCanucks. But yeah, either way you can't go wrong, I just think spending the extra $50 is worth while in this situation, thats something you have to decide on a personal level. I also wouldn't worry about heat or power draw if all your looking at is a single GPU solution. Plus side with the 470 is, you can get it on EVGA, the card is covered under a lifetime warranty. |

real game play is the best way to test, but, you can record a scene, or use an area that is very easy to replicate.. also repeating those same scenes 3 times with each card, and each setting also helps average out any strange anomaly that may occur.
The built in bench marks are no representation of gameplay..some benchmarks I get double the FPS that I do in actual gameplay..
Running the same area of BC2 for 30 min would be a great way to get an idea of a cards performance. but a lot of reviewers use 30 seconds to 1 min. of material. lol
Hard OCP is horrible he compares cards with different settinngs.... so no apples to apples, plus there are other issues with Kyle..

Hey once you get done testing out the 470 post some info on the forums if you could, I'd like to see that. One thing I read I'm not sure if its right or not is that there is a lack of overclockability with the new fermi cards.

Don't let me stop you from ordering..If the budget is tight get the 5850. If the extra $50.00 comes easy get the GTX 470.. They both have their pros and cons but are overall very comparable. It is up to you to figure out if the GTX 470 is worth the extra $50.00 lol I have read that some are not getting much of an overclock out of their GTX 470's, but I will find out how mine does shortly, but I do know that the 5850 does overclock very well.

I've never overclocked a gpu before. Justin do you have like a guide to overclocking a graphics card? I know most people use msi afterburner or something to overclock

Okay cool!
Would it be better to get the 5850 as far as it can go? Or use the 470 because of the benefits of physx and tesselation?

I'm sorry did you say physx? Did you mean batman? lol
In all reality, if your going to spend the extra $50 don't let nvidias gimmick "features" win you over. If you go for the 470, you do so for the possible performance gain. It has had a generally good bench review, usually sits halfway between a 5850 and 5870. That will fluctuate depending on the game you play though. Thing is the 5850 is pretty much tapped out of its power already, card has almost a year on it. The GTX 470 out for a few months, given might see even more performance out of it with future drivers, I think the 5850 is at its peak at the moment. As far as driver performance goes. So essentially, you ask yourself, is an extra $50 worth a bit more performance? (although its possible depending on your game, you will break even with a 5850) So its just a gamble you take with $50. At the end of the day though, the worst you can do with a GTX 470 is break even with a 5850, but if things go well, you will get more performance then it. So it's not really a huge deal, if your able to throw up the extra $50 go for it, if not don't. Can't go wrong either way. |

very well said... Physx is used in maybe 10 games, out of the thousands available for you to play.. If you get the 5850, you can overclock it to match the GTX 470 or beat it by a bit on average.. but lol it really does come down to a slightly faster card for a $50.00 bill...you really won't go wrong eaither way.

Thanks guys for all the help! I'm going with the 470 just because it's the newer card and the drivers could probably evolve it

Hey Justin did you get to test out that 470, because in the other thread you were calling it a turd and in this one you seem a bit more kind lol. Just wondering if you put some polish on it.

I have seen a lot of reviews, that shows it as a turd. lol Now after having it, I can say this so far.. in stock form it is not that hot, nor that loud... overclock it and yes, it is very, very loud, and very hot..
Prices seem to be all over the place, $280-$350.. on the lower end of the price range, it really is a decent deal.
Performance wise, stock, is not all that impressive, decent though... Overclock it... and wholy crap, it is a monster. 40%-50% overclcock can see 30%-35% performance gains... so then it will beat a stock 5850, and also a stock 5870, and be right there with a stock 480... even beating it it some benchmarks..
so Yes it has a ton of potential, but it is just awful to live with after you overclock it on the stock cooler. lol so pick your poison..

Yeah im having trouble deciding on these 2 graphics cards ATM, but it seems like he 470 is the best way to go. And justin, how loud would it be if i were to overclock it, and What would the power consumption be?

It matters the overclock, but if you push it, it does get really, really loud. lol I have not tested power consumption, but I would guess at least 250 watts per card. since it is overclocked higher than a GTX 480.. In stock form it does perform ok, but it is just a sin to run something that powerful knowing that 50% more power is just sitting there begging to be used. lol I really feel that it is hard to go wrong with the 5850 or the GTX 470.. |
