There were a few posts earlier regarding customers looking for 5870 cards. I was just able to score a Sapphire 5870 on Newegg and will either have DS ship my puter without it or send it to them to install.

I think DS has 5870's in stock now.
But if you have purchased it already.
Then just have DS ship you your rig without it option but speak to them over the phone and ask them to have it pre-read (pci power cables)
That way you can still keep the clean wiring look vs you try to find it and make room for it on your own |

The flow of chips out of TSMC was about 10,000 per month, so ATI had very limited amount of chips to install on their GPU's,. TSMC is now up to 100,000 chips per month, so we should be nearing the end of the 58xx drought. |

I just got off the phone with them a couple hours ago. They said they have at least 50 orders waiting for 5870 cards, and have been getting only a few in a week. They indicated about a month wait. They suggested I try to find one locally. No luck there. Couldnt find one in Houston Tx. I called everyone.
I will call DS in the morning and make sure that they have the latest drivers loaded and have it wired up so all I have to do is seat the card and plug it in. Edited by dmproske - 03 Dec 2009 at 8:49pm |

HMMMM...Just ordered my rig with the 5870. There was no mention that there would be any delay either by email or when I was on the phone with Sarah.
Wonder if I should inquire if my order will be delayed due to the slow trickle of 5870's?

good idea to check. you can always settle for 2x 275 and upgrade in march to either fermi or a ati card. i just heard the back order on the ati cards will end roughly when fermi is released

all the release of the fermi cards will do is cause a backlog of them, which will make buyers;
a. wait because it is so sweet. b. cause more of a backlog with ATI because some wont want to pay higher prices c. finally settle that bet between DST4ME and justin.kerr d. well i had to put something here... |

I have explained several times why there is a shortage of 5870's... nothing to do with ATI, and now that TSMC has there new equipment up and running, ATI can build 10x the cards they could 2 weeks ago...by the time that ATI gets the chips, builds the cards, and gets them to the distributors, then to the retailers.. it could be 3-4 weeks before the shortage is over.. but it already is getting better.. Newegg has had 5870's in stock a lot more than they did 2 weeks ago. And there is no doubt that Fermi will not make the Jan launch like DST says.. No chance.
Once they have some working beta models to send out to testers, it is about one month after that til we will have them available to the public, and it looks to be at least 2 months before beta samples will be available for testers.

I also doubt any fermi's will be released by Jan.
But I do believe we'll know alot more about them and possibly see bench scores during Jan
then again, instead of good news like I expect, the only news we could hear again during Jan is another delay announcment

even tho its tsmc running behind, its an ati card, I still blame ati first and foremost, second in line for blame is tsmc.
end of jan is not here yet, I'm still holding out, like I said, if i have to go down there and make one to release myself then that is what I will do

I have been hearing rumors today of May/June
A1 silicon complete failure.
A2 won't clock up to nvidias specs
A3 retaped, unkown if it will pass as of yet.
It takes 4 months to retape a new version.. so if A3 works March maybe, otherwise may/june

Well I have CONFIRMED that my build is delayed because I ordered the 5870. How long at this point is unknown. Could be a week delay or it could even be after the New Year.
Confirmed that if I downgrade to the 5850...possible...would likely have my rig in a week or so. Or upgrade...doubtful in my case as it would toast my budget and kill any
plans of getting a non TN monitor, therefore stuck with my 22" CRT.
So question for those reading this. If you were in the same boat, and some of you may very well be if you ordered recently, what would / will you do. Wait patiently for the 5870?
Downgrade to the 5850? Or do dual GPU of lessor cards? Go non-ATI? I really have no interest in buying a really cheap option that could be spent on my monitor just to have my
rig NOW, and then be wanting to upgrade GPU entirely to soon.
Just wondering what the mood and thinking is out there, as it appears I have the time to burn.

5850 is not enough to so I would have to buy 2 of them and spend more money, if there is LC on gpu then it would be lot more money.
I would just wait. but if your monitor is gonna be that 22" and it has a 1600 x 1200 res then 1 x 5850 is all you need and you should go with that. later when you get a bigger monitor then add a second 5850. Edited by DST4ME - 04 Dec 2009 at 4:43pm |

actually its an easy one for you.
1. is a bigger monitor coming within next 4 months? if yes then you wait for 5870, if no then you go with 5850. 2. is your current resolution at 1600 x 1200? if yes then you go with 5850, if no you wait for 5870. |

DS gets better prices, so I doubt if you could workout anything with DS.

I know but sometimes 10 GPU's in hand is better than 10 for less money that might be here in 2 weeks... lol

I agree with you, I just don't think this is one of those times from DS's point of view

1 - Almost certainly, as long as finances remain stable in this economy. After the Holiday's will be the REAL test as to how the economy goes. AND as long as I am VERY sweet to my wife!
2 - 1600 x 1200 on one 22" Viewsonic Pro series P810 CRT and one 22" Viewsonic Graffics Series G810 CRT, essentially identical monitors, running each off seperate computers. Also an old 19" Dell TN monitor that is on a stripped down (Nearly OS only) third rig that is purely for surfing / Downloading on the internet. The G810 is dying, clicks off and Degaussing A LOT! Very irritating! Screen shimmer at times. At some point one day it will click off and not come back.
Wife sees this problem & agrees that the monitor needs to be replaced, BUT! I doubt that TWO matching new IPS / TFT monitors is going to happen anytime soon. So most likely will go for a larger monitor to replace the G810 and either live with the monster CRT on my desk next to it or KVM the one new large monitor.
The main prob I see with ordering a GPU card from a third party vender is the Four Year DS warranty. DS is almost certainly NOT going to warranty it if I provide it.
It has been my PERSONAL past experience that the likeliest & first piece of hardware to die on me is the GPU. Sometimes not, but usually that has been my case in the past. So the Four Year Warranty was what finally sealed the deal for me and my wife on the DS rig order.
So if DS would honor the Four Year warranty on an outside GPU then I would do it. But, I bet they would not do it and I could not blame them in the least.
As the old saying goes, I guess it could not hurt to ask, right?
Well as I finished this the wife just got home and read LOS this and said to wait for the 5870.
