Looking at a 5870 on my rig that I'm thinking of purchasing as early as next week. Really wondering if there is a more bang for the buck card? Seems like its a lot of $$$ for the gain over other models, but I'm not the most knowledgeable. It seems like a great card, but just about 100 bucks more than I feel it should cost.
I don't want to take a huge performance hit but if there is something close to it in capability I would like to explore those options if they are cheaper. |

It's one of the top-end cards and those are always a little pricey. From all the feedback I read, the 5870 is worth the price if you game on high resolutions. You might want to look at the 5850 if you want to go a little cheaper. I'm not sure about temperature and noise, but you can ask for the free GPU OCing.
I'm not too up to date with current video cards so my feedback probably isn't great. If you provide your needs and gaming resolution then people on here can help you better. Edited by cswiacki - 20 Mar 2010 at 12:35am |

well it all depends on what your needs are, as mentioned, if you are gaming then tell us your resolution and we can tell you if you need a 5870 or a 5850.

honestly I don't know what the resolution will be. I currently use a 17inch monitor but am in the process of buying a 24 inch plus.

I should also mention I will be using 1 bigger main monitor and just keeping my 17inch attached for web browsing etc.

I'm going to guess that your gaming resolution will be 1920 x 1080 on a 24 inch. Do you play demanding games like Crysis or something lower end like WoW? If you are going to use two monitors then investing in a 5870 might be a better option. DS also offers a promotional free GPU over clocking so that might be something to consider if you're leaning towards a 5850. I am not sure if that would produce undesirable noise or heat, though.
You might want to make sure that you're going to be gaming on a 1920 x 1080 monitor, though. Edited by cswiacki - 20 Mar 2010 at 4:51pm |

at 24" your is gonna be 1900 x 1200 and for that you do want a 5870.
forget the oc on gpu DS does, its very minimal and produces no real gains. if you play games like crysis then keep in mind you can't really max out games like that. |

your res should be 1600 x 1200 but some are higher so double check, if it is 1600 then yes 5850 is what you want.

I always wonder why people say you can't run Crysis maxed out. If I'm spending 2k on a computer I feel I should be able to. :( Even though I don't play it...its been out forever...

the game just requires more power then there is out there when playing at higher res, so its not a matter of money, its matter of what the game wants, look at 1900 x 1200 with 2 x 5870 what you get is 56fps but that is only with 2x aa:
adding a third will not make that much of a difference. |

The people who made Crysis wanted their game to stick out above the rest. What better way to do that than to tease all the hardcore gamers with graphics they can't fully enjoy?

Really? I thought it just had absurdly good graphics. I only played it on dx9 so I thought how it looked on dx10 was what all the hype was about.

I have no regrets with my HD5970. Call it a little future proof protection.
But man, it's a loooong wait till they get one available. If you are concerned with the noise (and you should be) of these high end GPU's get the H20 with very quiet fans (Not the performance Zalmans). My HD5970 never goes over 42c with fans running very very slow. Keep in mind, if you go with H20 it might be quite a bit more difficult to upgrade down the road. ( IMHO - and I'm not the expert, just a user ) Edited by Grandpa - 23 Mar 2010 at 3:24am |

Really thinking 5850 is better card for the $$$. 5870 is just too expensive for the gains received. Am I wrong in thinking with that logic?

if you know how to oc the hell out of the 5850 and keep it stable then the 5850 is better, if not then the 5870 is what you wnat for 1900 x 1200

If going with DS you have the option to have them perform the upgrade (thus handling the LC aspect if you are not comfortable with it.) Correct?
I am assuming the costs would be hardware purchased, and shipping.

you can have DS add a second card to LC but then you are looking at price of shipping, parts, labor.
