I have an Aura from 2017 which I love. Has performed flawlessly for years. Just this week I heard it in the middle of the night - the fan blowing like a jet engine. Then it crashed. It's happened a couple of times since. Anyone had any experience with this? I'd hate to lose this computer because it's my all-time favorite machine. Thanks!

I had a situation where my air cooled CPU fan burned out after over speeding due to accumulated dust on the inside fins next to the fan restricted airflow causing it to speed up like crazy. If I would have removed the fan to get to the inner fins rather than just cleaning the outside cooling fins it wouldn't had happened to me.
Fans usually don't speed up like crazy unless they don't have access to air to push. Without free air flow they over speed like a hair dryer does if you hold your hand over the input vent. There are smarter people than me on here that should be able to provide with guidance in how to use CPUID HWMonitor and other tools to assess the root cause of your issue. The crashing should be recorded in system events and it would be interesting to know the temperatures that were being reached on the CPU for example at time of crash. Since you are a verified customer with life time support I would be calling Digital Storm Monday for advice unless one of the Wizards here solves your issue before tomorrow. Good luck in getting this figured out!

Yep, like Onkel advised, the Aura if I remember correctly was an AIO unit with cpu, graphics, psu all behind the screen. Not a lot of room for getting away with dust buildup. I would pull the back, get some canned air and blow it out in short sprays, unplugged of course. Fans speeding up could’ve also been an increase in fan speed desperate to stop the cpu from overheating.
Download HWMONITOR, free, run it in the background while gaming or something stressful. It’ll record present , min and max temps. Stop the program and see where the cpu cores are in temp. Not sure your cpu, but anything in the 90C or above means overheating. Over 100C crashes it, depending on cpu. Shutting down is to save the cpu. Good luck.

It sure sounds like a thermal shutdown. Do clean all, including the radiator. Touch the AIO pump to make sure it is working. They do go bad. Hopefully all it needs is a good cleaning. Good luck. ![]() |

Hello
Just an update - under tech support supervision we opened the back and got in and cleaned everything up. For the time being all seems to be well. May have to get a new GEForce graphics card in the future. I can live with that. Thanks for all the advice. Per your help I am running HWMonitor. Would love if anyone can provide me with a snapshot of the optimal specs down the line of what I should be looking at. Thanks Edited by pmalmont - 24 Feb 2022 at 11:49am |

Especially for a laptop, which you have learned runs hotter than any desktop, the optimal thermal specs can be defined as any temps that don't occasion shutdown. There is so much variation possible depending on the parts, the uses, and, yes, the cleanliness, that that definition fits IMHO. You should be satisfied with anything under about 80C, 70 would be much better, but be prepared for temps to occasionally sneak higher. Under 90C may not be optimal, but it will probably still work.
