The speakers in question are avid's AV-30's, probably the best set of desktop speaker's I've ever owned.
I use them all over for parties and such, so there is a fair amount of movement of these speakers. I'm thinking the jostling may have done something, but I'm usually fairly careful with them. I recently noticed I'm only getting sound out of one speaker. It's an interesting problem that I've narrowed down to the speaker unit itself.
Normal headphones and other speakers still work great when plugged directly into the desktop. However, if I plug the speakers into the computer and then the headphones into the speakers, the headphones suffer from the same issue. Similar issue using a smartphone instead of the computer.
So I believe I've isolated the problem to the speakers to themselves. This is the main 'hub' speaker with the power cord and volume control that goes silent. If I unplug the other speaker from it, this main speaker starts making sounds finally, but very quietly. Also, if I turn the volume all the way to the right speaker with the other speaker attached, the entire unit goes silent. Basically when the 2nd speaker is attached, it kills the volume on the first speaker.
I'm wondering if theres a simple, obvious fix either inside the case or outside with some sort of switch I don't know exists. If not, its not the end of the world. Some googling revealed that this is likely a 'circuit board' or 'capacitor' issue, but I was wondering if anyone here had more insight.
I have a feeling I'm just going to be buying another pair of speakers, so can anyone recommend comprable ones? I'd like ones of a similar cost/style of these.

Hi LaneHayes...... A long shot is to look at the headphone jack. Headphones shunt the speakers when plugged in by a small shunt switch within the female port. If the shunt switch fails to spring back then the speakers stay silent. Try plugging and unplugging the headphone jack repeatly. If you pull it apart check out the female plug inside the case and wiggle things about.
Probably not the problem but ya never can tell. Good luck.. |
