I put AVG on my wife's machine, and it's doing just fine.

I also hear good things about Avast.

Preferences?  Have you had just one or both?

I've used Avast! and I've been really happy with it. Easy to use, and appears to keep my PC very clean. Have not used AVG but I've heard on it - maybe I should try it on my new rig?

AVAST is a good program.  Been using it for a number of years.

I've use AVG on my companies laptop and it works ok...it does seem to take for ever to run a full scan, but other than that I don't have any real complaints.

I use Avast on both my home pc's...one an old Dell with XP Home and the other a Digital Storm PC with XP Home. It runs well on both. I had Norton for years on the Dell and it is a serious resource hog. My Dell runs faster now that I've switched to Avast AND it found 2 viruses that Norton did not.

All in all, my prefrence would be for Avast over AVG, but AVG is a very close 2nd.

I highly recommend Avira Anti-Virus. It is totally free and has minimal overhead when compared to AVG and Avast.

What did you mean by "minimal overhead"?
