Topic: Avon - Heat Posted: 04 Jun 2019 at 5:41pm |
Hey everyone, hope all is well. Been weighing a few options; sending my current rig to DS for updating (shouldn't need to, but hardware seems to be failing), and/or getting a laptop to at least get me through the short-term. My old laptop bit the dust long ago. Considering the Avon, probably the 16GB RAM option with an extra SSD in there. My hesitance comes from being plagued with heat issues on any and all gaming laptops I've ever owned. In the worst case (brand to not be named) components actually melted. Now, I'm not expecting DS quality laptops to have the melty-metal issue, but I am curious if anyone can speak to temperatures on these. I know they are relatively new so that may be a big ask, but all I'm seeing online are reviews of the old Equinox, and people commenting that it could get preeeeetty hot (e.g. don't game with it on your lap unless you want to get a little too toasty). Thoughts?

Caveat: I have zero experience with DS laptops, either their old lines or their newest line. Further, I don't personally know anyone who has purchased with or used their laptops, so I can offer no specific advice/experience with DS laptops. That said, and at risk of loosing DS brownie points - I have had so many bad experiences with gaming laptops (including something very similar to yours where a component literally melted) that I cannot in good conscience recommend them anymore. However, I might just be an old fart who is way out of touch with gaming laptops as I gave up on them over a decade ago due to endless issues. I have honest doubts that DS, or anyone, has created a not-inferno gaming laptop as I know people with 2018 models (not DS) that still overheat themselves, but I would happily be proved wrong on that notion in regards to those offered by DS.

Hi Eggy, Sorry to share Tidgxor's opinion and ready to be proven wrong. "Gaming laptop" is an oxymoron.

I agree with Tigdxor and hose as well . I’m afraid it’s thermal dynamics. Gaming laptops always battle with the heat that good quality gaming GPU’s under load will generate while in small confined laptop spaces... I’m sure DS has designed in the very best in GPU cooling, but gaming laptops are always gonna run warm...lol.

When I saw Avon, I thought he was going to start discussing make up. man, it has been a loooooooong day already.
Oh, and I'll add my 2 cents: If you do not want heat, skip the gaming laptop. |

Jawa - if it makes you feel any better, I may be getting one regardless. The consensus of this community (and the gaming community at large) seems to be that levels of high heat in a "gaming" laptop are unavoidable. I've also seen a number of graphics showing that a cooling stand can help manage those temps a great deal. I'm of the belief that a $25-40 investment in a cooling stand is well worth it for a potential increase in longevity. And, if nothing else, peace of mind.

Interesting! Never bought a laptop before and didn't know those cooling stands existed. That might be a good compromise. Thank you for that info, Eggy.

Reality is those kind of coolers might save your actual lap from the flames while gaming...lol, but probably won't have a great impact on your gaming laptop temps. Best ya can really do is keep room air cool as possible where you use it, and keep your air intake vents very clean and clear...

Hi Eggy. My thread to comment on. Why yes I have a DS Behemoth laptop 2015. It WAS absolutely top of the line then and still damn powerful now. Guess what I have SLI 980Ms.
Heat? Yes. Computer room a cool 68? Yes. Ceiling fans? Check. Cooler Master Cooling Pad? Yes. NO I don't have heat issues. And I game. Hard. Live in New Orleans which gets just a tad HOT. I love it! |

Hey oldlady RPGer - good to see you're still around the community, I recall reading up on your purchases!
Thanks for the feedback - I definitely need a new laptop, and I've made my decision go this road and potentially hold off on the new desktop for a while. Glad to hear yours is still running strong! I'm in new england so hopefully not as high stress as New Orleans heat-wise. Just waiting on a new credit card to arrive and then I'll be placing my order! I figure this machine will be more than capable and get me by for quite some time until I'm ready to pull the trigger on a new desktop. |

Hey Snow -
I have not. Once I get my new laptop, I'll approach that task. It needs to be done, but I want to take my time about it, and I'll need to have a functioning computer while the desktop is out of commission. I'll likely be bugging you for assistance, if you're open to it ;) |

Hey Eggy,
NP, ask away and I will help where I can. Definitely take yourtime. Trust me I was nervous when I had to remove the fan and heatsink on my 2080Ti FTW3 Ultra and install the waterblock on my current build lol. I definitely did not want to mess that up. |

Got my Avon last week. Thermals are awesome for a laptop. gpu never goes above 75c max load extended use. cpu in the 60c range. Def puts out some hot air out of the vents but never thermal throttles. Best gaming laptop to date.

Ordered last night! Apparently processing the order may take longer because I used an Amex, but I'll make sure to update you all on timing and then do a review once it's in. Thanks everyone for the input!
