Hey guys, well I'm back and looking to buy my 3rd DS computer. My son just turned 14 and has really taken hold of the PC gaming world. In fact in almost 2 months he hasn't even touched his PS4... I couldn't be more proud haha. He plays BF4, Hardline, GTA etc and I want to surprise him with a new computer for a Christmas present. He REALLY likes the bolt or the smaller towers not one so massive like my HAF X. I also want to pick him up a 4k monitor if you have any recommendations. For the PC I'm looking at somewhere around 3000 and Monitor no more than 1000.

i don't think the Bolt's accommodate two graphics cards, which is what you'll need to enjoy gaming at 4k.  you'll need either 2xgtx 980ti or Titan X and it will still depend on the game to optimize sli well.  i've read about it numerous times, that 4k on even 1x Titan X isn't compatible with high/max game settings and pleasurable fps.

realistically a good 4k setup is going to run you into the $3k price range (without the monitor).  add another (good, because why get a low budget 4k monitor?) $500+ for the monitor.  for an example: http://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-VP2780-4K-27-Inch-Monitor-3840x2160/dp/B00SHZSXVI/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1439332514&sr=1-3&keywords=4k+monitor&refinements=p_89%3AViewSonic

Hi Sgt. Moore....Been awhile.

A single 980ti in a smaller case like the Bolt can play at 4k, but like was said, settings can't be max and frames fall into the 45fps range for games I've seen tested. Still good gaming, but 4k does tax any single card.

Keep in mind that the Bolt III is not the best option for maximizing the raw performance/price ratio. The build is heavily focused on aesthetics. It's a showpiece. And it carries a pretty hefty price tag premium compared to the components inside. It's as powerful as any single GPU build can be, of course, but doesn't support SLI -- and as others have said, right now, you want SLI if you want to do 4K gaming.

By the way, a single GTX 980 Ti is more than capable of maxing out every game on the market at 1440p, which still looks phenomenal. It also opens up your monitor options more, because a G-sync 1440p monitor will be noticeably less than a 4K monitor with G-sync.

Thanks for the info Bprat, db188, and zpconn ! Yes bprat it has been a long while thats the beauty of my DS computers, you never have to come to complain or find out why something isn't working right !!! So after doing some thinking I think I'm gonna just go with a good solid PC build and forget the 4k gaming for now, he has a 4k TV so gaming in 1080p will more than make him happy ! So build me a rockin single GPU computer or SLI if its really needed.
As long as he can run the games I listed and the upcoming Battlefront etc at max he will be happy.

Also whats a real good 27+ inch monitor, I hear alot of good things about BenQ my brother loves his.

Again thank you guys in advance really working on getting this taken care of before I have to leave again !!

PS is just staying at 1080 a good Idea or is going with the 1440 a better move ?

going for a nice experience at 1440p i'd recommend a system based around a GTX 980ti (or 2), either on the new Skylake I7-6700K (for it's hyper-threading ability in multi player online situations) or 6-core X99 Haswell-E I7-5820K.  16GB of good quality, high speed ram should be sufficient.  a well-reviewed/spec'd power supply (Seasonic has always been my preference and is used in high end Corsair psu products) with the appropriate wattage.  i don't know enough about new mobos for the Skylake chipset, but i prefer Asus Deluxe or ROG RVE for the X99 system.

look at the Velox level 2 (with 1 or 2 vid cards) as an option for the quad core Skylake version.

or the Velox level 3 (with the I7-5820k, Asus Deluxe mobo, and 1 or 2 vid cards) for Haswell-E version.

both will run 300-600 over your 3k price range if going with x2 vid cards options.

as for monitor, if you're not too picky about true colors/image quality then get a fast/well made TN based 1440p monitor along the lines of the BenQ gaming line you mentioned.  personally, my preference for both speed and image quality would be this: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/acer_xb270hu.htm for around $800 (my rationale is that if you're going to spend $1600 on gpus then don't cheap out on a monitor).

As you can see, there are so many ways to go.

If you stick with a single card for 1440p then your son's desire for the Bolt is certainly doable. I like the Bolt case but not for everyone.

Let us know which way you go.

Hi Sgt.Moore,

Here is a build that uses a Mid-Tower Corsair Obsidian 450D case. The 450D is a steel case with good cooling options. The Apollo case is full tower case. The 450D is not a Bolt size but still some what compact. I put in the DS remote control color lighting that a Kid would like.

I went with the i7 6700K CPU, a single 980i GPU, The 850 Pro SSD, Blue Ray drive and a H110i GT - 280mm Radiator closed loop CPU cooler. You will be ready for a second GPU if you want to go 4K in the future.

Hi Sgt.Moore,

Here is a Bolt 3 build that anyone would like to have. It has about the same equipment as my 450D build but this build has CPU and GPU liquid cooling with the Swiftech cooler. If you wanted to drop the GPU from the loop you could save $183. Again I included the remote controlled color lighting.
