My luck with Windows 7 absolutely sucks, at least for now that is what I think my problem is. I have never had as many problems with one OS ever. Multiple problems like:
Boot time is at 3 minutes plus. Go into computer and click on any drive and the system freezes and requires a forced shutdown. This happens on all drives not just one of them. I have 3. I can't tell you how many times I have used task manager to close a program that just freezes for no reason. About 3 times a week the system will never make it past the blue screen (not BSOD). After forcing a shutdown and rebooting, the system says an error has occurred, press R to repair. Then it suggests a system restore to the last known configuration. What sucks is I have not installed any new software, hardware or drivers that would cause this to happen. At this rate, I will run out of restore points, and it may suggest that I go back to vista, geez. Microsoft Office specifically Excel and Access take for ever to do a task. For example I was importing data in access using the append function and what should take seconds takes forever and sometimes it just stops forcing another ctrl alt delete. The only thing that makes me wonder is the loud grinding noise the PC makes when trying to perform these tasks. There are many more issues that I won't go into. And just in case you ask I did defrag the system and used chkdsk and it found no errors. I also used CC cleaner today and the problems still exist. With Vista I never ever had any of these problems. So back to Vista I go and see if that takes care of the problems. If it does I will wait for W7 SP2 before I ever re-install again. If that does not work then I know it will be something wrong with my DS system, which I am hoping is not the case. Now I feel better that I got to vent. But I still hate having to redo this PC. ![]() Edited by e06028 - 24 Nov 2009 at 12:44am |

Unfortunately it was an upgrade. I formatted the hard drive then installed Vista and then Win 7 right after Vista finished. I know that was some or maybe all of my problem but I just don't think buying the full version now is worth the money for me. Vista worked fine and I really need a stable machine, so this weekend I will redo the OS.
I also ran memtest last night and no errors were reported. Edited by e06028 - 24 Nov 2009 at 1:57pm |

Sorry to hear you have had so many problems with Win7.
I would try doing a fresh install of Windows 7. I have in the past noticed that when doing an OS "upgrade" it seems to leave a lot of files from the previous OS still installed and as most have noticed, Vista had a lot of load issues to say the least.
With a fresh install of Windows 7 you should notice a huge improvement over Windows Vista. I would say if you are still having issues that it may be deeper than an OS issue.

My upgrade booted from the disc drive and did a fresh format and install. It works great with zero defects.

I can also attest to this working. Thats how I did it. Windows 7 will also save your old vista or XP stuff in a .old folder for you after the reformat. Although I realize you don't have stuff as you have already wiped your drive. Worked well for me.
Good tutorial here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html.
The link gives several ways for a clean install.

I did the upgrade but distinctly remember it asking if I wanted a fresh install of the new OS or an upgrade. I was happy to have that option.
That said, did you have any programs that "weren't fully compatible" when it upgraded? It should have spat out a list before you upgraded and shortly after the last restart. I know Daemon ( thanks mostly to Sarah) was giving my comp fits because my comp was searching for drives that didn't exist during bootup and lagging badly.. unless i opened the DVD drive to make it stop. I assume other non-microsoft programs or patches for games would have the same issue. I've also heard some issues with Nvidia drivers and Win 7 so you may want to investigate that if you have an nvidia card. |

I hope now everybody sees why we all say that its recommended to fresh install instead of upgrade, things don't always workout with upgrades due to registry conflicts.
@e06028, you can do a fresh install from an upgrade disk as Sodius said, so do that instead and you should be fine

If I had known that I could do fresh install with upgrade version I would have done that first
. And I agree DST never ever do and upgrade. You should all be thankful that I tested this out and can really tell you clean install is the way to go.
