is there a program free-ware or paid
that backs up your computer files and programs
without having an external hard drive?

ok I'm a bit confused, first of all, are you saying that you want to backup a clean install?

second is the backup going back on the same pc or a different pc?

I think what he's trying to say is,
A. He's doing a clean install of windows.
B. He needs to back up everything before he does this.
C. After he does a clean install he wants all that back on the same computer.

again I'm confused, if you back your programs and then install a fresh os, you can't restore your programs again.

after a fresh install, all you can move back are files music/movies/work etc but os and apps can't be moved over to a fresh install.

the link I gave you for acronis is for bakcing up a whole HDD, whatever is on that HDD will be copied.

Acronis True Image can also be configured to back up just certain directories, so that you can backup only data, though it isn't intuitive on how to do this.

if he's only going to be backing up data then ntbackup could do it for him, and that's free (though he still needs to put the bkf file somewhere).

I'm talking about cloning, you are talking about imaging, I don't recommend imaging to anybody.

as for ntbackup, for data alone, you don't need any backup software, you just copy the files to a different location.

some times ntbackup will leave duplicate regkeys in the system also.

Jake007, Your best bet is to clone your drive.
Like DST said, or even better get a new external
hard drive would be the best option for you.

I am getting ready to start off with a brand new DS computer with say Vista Home Premium (64-Bit Edition). I install all the programs that I use.

Now is there a way to copy the HD so that when it is time to do a fresh install I can just move the copy on top of "C" drive and have a fresh install again including all the programs?

OH and where is the "edit" button for this board so you can edit a post that you made. I know there is one but darn if I can find it.

Thanks
Ron

my clone guide does exactly what you are asking for. well actually no wait, when you fresh install you have to reinstall all apps and programs.

when you use a back, you go back to the backup, in other words you are back that the old install.

the edit button is under "post options" over there >>> on the top right of this post, you can only edit your own posts.

DST4Me pointed the way to the "edit" button (top right)...  but, if I might be so bold as to add that clicking "Post Options" may look like an empty box until you run your cursor down/into to what appears to be an empty white box below it.  I only mention this...because I missed it myself--a couple of time before figuring it out...then again, I'm not too bright either  Clown

DST4ME,
Thank you for all your help. You are like a computer god looking after all the idiots like me.

That does look like a great program.
Let's say you do the clone of C drive after you have installed all your apps and then unplugged your external D drive and put it away.

6 months from now you can get out your external drive, plug it in and boot from it? Then copy your clone over to C drive, then unplug the external, boot from C and you will have a fresh install of Windows and all the apps you had installed at that time?

BTW thank you for the heads up on the edit button, I would never have found it since it looks black when you click on it. Is there a way I can delete the blank post above that I screwed up.

Thanks again for all the help.
Ron

My pleasure

don't worry about the blanks post only admins/mods can delete that.

I'm just a person trying to help, we all have to start some where.

if you make a clone today do it right so that the boot sectors don't get deleted (aka follow my guide exactly), then you have a full clone.

you can run this clone anytime you want and if you do so you will be back to when the clone was made.

if you clone this clone, and boot off the clone you just made, then you have the original clone and you have the new clone in your PC and yes it will boot and yes you will be back at the time when the original clone was made.
