Ok, I'm beginning to wonder about this.. There are a couple of scenes in the Battle of Proxycon demo that will slow down to 25-30 fps at the default resolution of 1280x1024. When I bump the resolution up to my monitor's native (2560x1600), of course my machine has a few more scenes where it drops to 25-30 fps. What I don't get is why the 25-30 fps @ 2560x1600 is soooo much slower than the 25-30 fps @ 1280x1024.
I've noticed that in the CoD4 demo, too. FRAPS will show 50 fps @ max detail and 2560x1600, but it looks more like a 25 fps.. Meanwhile, a 30 fps count in the ET:QW demo (capped) looks like a 30 fps.
Oh yes, I'm not using FRAPS with 3DMark06, so I know that it isn't an issue with FRAPS. Is this a common occurance that I am unaware of, or does this sound as strange to you as it does to me?

That is really odd, I have never had that happen before on any machine. The fps shown has always matched with the the performance of what I am seeing in game.
Maybe the differance is due to the quicker "recovery time" the game has when running at lower resolutions...IE the game drops in FPS but can jump back up faster maybe?
you have the latest version of FRAPS? are you using the "free" version or full? Edited by ed1371 - 06 Nov 2007 at 4:01pm |

I have the full version of FRAPS, which I downloaded for my DS machine in August sometime.
The thing is, 3DMark itself is reporting 30fps in Battle of Proxycon @ 2560x1600, but it is obviously not. Like in the CoD4 demo, it looks more like half the amount it is reporting.
I think I know what you mean about drops and recovery, but I'm thinking that isn't the case since I'm watching scenes where it's a steady ~30fps.

Same thing.. I've noticed now that in 3DMark06, it looks fine if the panning is slow. The moment you get faster camera travel, it starts getting jerky while still keeping the same FPS count. That's kind of how it is in CoD4. I wonder if it's just a problem with SLI scaling at 2560x1600?

I've also noticed the herky-jerky feel while panning in COD4. I had FRAPS going in the background and it never dipped below 50 FPS, but it looked as if it it was running at have that speed while panning. It seems worse when there's more to draw, like out doors and stuff like that. As an experiment I lowered my resolution a couple of notches and the panning felt much smoother. As a matter of fact, the panning became completely smooth. There's just something about that game man. I've never played a game before where I averaged FPS in the 70's, to look like it's struggling. Bad coding? I dunno. Man, I run the Crysis demo and when I pan around (as you do), its smooth as silk (except for in some spots of course), and I just barely hit 30 FPS in that game. Go figure. Anyway Crulend, it's not your system that's struggling (IMO), its the game (COD4).

Ever since COD2 the coding for the COD series has been off, even when you make drastic adjustments to your config and graphic settings COD2 and obviously COD4 still just don't perform as well as other games. Personally for my older rig(radeon x600/1gigram), it runs CSS on DX8.1 better than it runs COD2 on DX7. And thats with COD2 on all low settings and CSS at medium. |

Yech.. SRL, what res were you running CoD4 on originally? When I bring it down to 1920x1200, it seems like the problem goes away. But, that's also because I'm averaging 70-80 fps at that res.
So, can anyone else confirm the slowdown on 3Dmark06? 1280x1024 runs fine at a 26 fps count, but a 26 fps count in 2560x1600 is really choppy.

I was running 1680x1050, my monitors resolution. But I lowered it to 1024x768 and ran smooth as silk. I saw no difference in visual quality. I just tried it at 1280x960 and it still ran smooth. I haven't had the chance to run out doors yet as I'm stuck inside. I will let you know how it goes. Sorry if these resolutions aren't exact. Its been a long day and the Bourbon is flowing. But you get the idea. :-)

Well, I guess resolutions are a moot point now. When I loaded up the new .09 beta a few days ago, it improved performance and fixed the incorrect FPS count. I'm figuring that it must have been reporting the FPS as double what it actually was, because I'm now averaging 40 (averaging 65 w/bad FPS) and it's really, really smooth. :D
The downside is that it did the same thing to 3DMark06, so my benchmarks are way lower (~14,000). This has been happening ever since the 163.71 WHQL drivers, so I'm wondering if this invalidates everyone's scores.
