So my Lumos is catching an earlier flight from San Jose than originally scheduled and arriving here on Friday instead of Monday. This means that if I attempt to get the system set up and squared away ahead of the original schedule, I will have to do it by myself and not with my son (20) or the friendly IT pro who has always saved me from the consequences of my own ineptitude during previous, less plug-and-play installations. This process should be pretty straightforward because I do not intend to do any hardware swapping out (drives, etc.) but — laugh if you must — my capacity to screw up even the most uncomplicated tech installs cannot be underestimated. The office space is very snug, too, and I have a LOT of gaming and other peripherals to manage, along with cable-taming; this will be very hard on my messed-up lower back so what I need to do is have a plan and avoid surprises so I’m going to post some questions here knowing that you guys will have the answers and I might be spared a little frustration when I run into a snag that causes me to ponder my own ignorance. As I say, feel free to laugh but please consider responding while chuckling.
- At what point in the installation might I need to ground myself and how? - Are there on/off switches on the back of the case (to activate internal lighting, for example) that I need to be aware of? - I faintly remember a warning from a previous DS PC install emphasizing the need to plug one particular component directly into the motherboard vs. any other available slot on the back of the case. What is this component and how can I be sure to identify the right slot? - Does the software for fan control and lighting come preinstallled by DS? I have no experience of these apps on my two previous DS rigs. - What is the best procedure for deactivating Steam on my current machine so that I can re-download whichever games I want to install on the new one without running into licensing difficulties? - I am getting a 1TB SSD boot drive and a 2 TB HDD. I intend to install all games (except perhaps DCS World and all its modules) on the HDD and to park all my data on the HDD too, but should I put all other programs on the SSD, such as Office, my non-pro DV editing suite, all utilities and AV, ASW and all other security software, including everything that runs in the background? Is there a rule of thumb that anyone can give me about this? And does all software, both from CD and digital downloads, allow the user to choose a drive on which to install? - Is it correct that all software relating to USB peripherals be present on the system and detectable before any of those devices (including printer, scanner, all gaming devices with software) be physically connected to the PC via USB? I think that’s it for the moment. Excuse the long post. If any of you have other installation pearls of wisdom you’d like to share with someone like me who knows his limitations and is more of a “sophisticated consumer” of tech than a guy with much hands-on installation experience, I would be most grateful (and if you are in Los Angeles I will buy you a beer…) Thank you! Congrats on getting your new rig this week.
1..no need to ground yourself unless you open the side cover and have to plug in anything that came loose in shipping. For most, just remove packing, if it’s installed, close the cover and fire it up. 2..the power supply has an on/off switch but usually comes On. 3..no need for plugging into the mobo, internally. That might have been for side cover fans in the past. 4.. if you ordered the DS fan control than it does come installed. 5.. you do not have to disable Steam when going to a new PC. Steam recognizes your email and password. Doesn’t check hardware. Just log in to Steam and start the downloads. 6..I have DCS World on my SSD and most other games on my secondary drive, also an SSD. For games used a lot I recommend them on the SSD, but it’s up to you. Depends on the game. Some games don’t benefit from faster loads. Games that call for refreshs, like new textures, benefit from faster loads. 7..I suggest just hooking up your keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc then turn the pc on. Windows usually recognizes any peripheral plugged in while it’s on and enables it automatically.. Most things are simple plug and play. Have fun. |

You CAN ground yourself simply by touching your metal case. It's often advised to wear an antistatic wrist strap if you're gonna mess about in there a lot.
You definitely want all your productivity and maintenance type software on the SSD for speedier loading, and especially all those system searches from malware preventers and CCleaner and the like. All software defaults to install on the C drive, but always asks if this is correct, so you get to choose. When setting up Steam it will ask you where you want your downloads to go, but you CAN change that with each download. I think you may find 1TB primary leaves you lots of room to spare at first. You can install dedicated peripheral software after the fact. YOU GUYS FLY AIRPLANES in DCS World? |

Thanks, guys. Yes, I've flown full-fidelity sims for many years now but took a long break when my tech fell behind the curve. Now with my new bad boy 2080 and 2K monitor I can learn the DCS F/A-18 and the Tomcat and try VR.
So am I correct in inferring that there is no need to "decommission" Steam or (or Uplay or Origin) from my current PC in order to be able to install those services on the new one? Today I am planning to uninstall all games or simply delete them from my HDD on the E: drive. Can you recommend a proper approach to this. Also, because I want to "wipe" the PC in order to give it to my son, is there a recommended procedure for this? Many thanks, as ever. |

Steam can be used on multiple computers and devices.
Depending on what level “wipe” you mean, if it’s not a security issue then you can just reinstall Windows and selecting new install. Or just individually delete what he won’t use. Add/Remove programs in Windows lists what games and programs you have and a delete option. Edited by bprat22 - 03 Jan 2019 at 1:24pm |

That is so way cool! gotta be lookin' forward to that! I think Steam will simply note the fact you signed on from a different computer and ask you if that's okay. Just makes sure nobody hijacked your Steam account. |

Just go to Steam on your new system, sign in with your user name and password and voila. Go to Library, view the games you have and dl the one you want to play. Steam will send a notification to your e-mail that someone opened your account in a new machine. Game on.

Can you post your Config code so we can see how you built your Lumos? What 2K monitor did you buy? I'm also in the market for a 2K. Do you happen to know the brand and model number? |

Yes, I'd be happy to share. I am just setting the system up now -- blazing performance! -- so give me about an hour and I will post config code and monitor info here. |

Here's the link to my DS build:
https://www.digitalstorm.com/configurator.asp?id=2118444 And here's a link to the monitor: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0777RY75V/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 So far, this setup is fantastic. There are a lot of people here (Cretae, Bprat) who know a lot more about monitors than I do but I would advise you to look for a monitor with G-Sync to go with your nVidia GPU if you want to optimise gaming display output. The other criteria apart from resolution is obviously refresh rate. |

The Lumos is a really great looking case with a "quirk". My decision was dictated entirely by the fact that it's the only DS case with the window (well it's an entire transparent side panel, to be accurate) on the left as you look at the case from the front. My PC case has to go under a built-in desk to the right and there's no wiggle-room on that. The light show is spectacular. The "quirk" is that the on/off switch and the two USB ports about three inches from the front on the top of the case are a bit of a PITA for someone with an under-desk PC position like mine. Looking at how much glass cladding there is around the case, even on the non-transparent sides, this design choice is not surprising but I am having to locate the on/off switch by feel, as it is completely invisible. Let me know if you would like me to post a few pics. |

I second the quirkiness of the power button. I have the Lumos, love it, but the power button is on the opposite side of side window, meaning the opposite side of where I sit. It’s also recessed below the top and kind of hidden unless I turn it on before sitting and leaning over the case.
I knew this before buying, so no surprises, but still a negative, but the only one. I cut a small piece of white sticky post it note in the shape of an arrow and placed it on the top glass pointing at the recessed button. A very high tech fix. Now I don’t fumble around trying to find the button. |

And a very important question. After all, what’s the point of modding my case with a post it sticky if I don’t go all the way. |

If I need to direct a message directly to you for help how best can I do this? I don't want to create a new post with your name in the Subject I feel that's the wrong use for this forum. Thanks. |
