Does he get the option in the boot sequence to choose which OS to boot to? ...and then if he chooses XP it doesn't work? Or does the option not even present?
From your description, sounds like he has 2 separate, HDD's - one for Vista and the other for XP. If the option to choose the OS during boot isn't there, he might have the XP drive master/slave jumpers set incorrectly. (Disclaimer: I actually don't know if what I just spewed is correct. It sounded logical to me though.) ![]() |

Yeah....you did mention SATA. Sorry about that. Any error if he chooses XP at the boot menu? Or does the system just say "*%#@ you. I'm booting Vista"?

Before you scrap it, you might try messing with EasyBCD to see if you can set up boot files properly. It writes boot records for you.

Run EasyBCD from the XP drive and try repairing the boot record on the Vista drive. Sometimes just having it write a new master boot record on the drive for you is enough. You can also set up the dual boot using EasyBCD. That utility will also redo the boot.ini for you automatically, btw. It's a great little utility.
Actually, I'm not completely clear on how far it is getting. If it is getting into the Vista load screen before it blows up, it must be a driver being loaded during Vista's boot sequence. Man, this is one of those things where I wish I could take a look at it directly to see what it's doing. Does it dump with an error code or just hang? I'm guessing you already googled the error code? |
