Well, my old Beast is dying. It was originally a Cyberpower purchase made some 4 years ago, and has seen 1 1/2 upgrades. 1/2 because the last one wasn't successful - I tried to slap in two 4890's CF and a new PSU, but kept getting system crashes playing Crysis, Bioshock, HAWX.
Finally had to RMA the boards (keeping the Corsair 850HX, tho'), but I don't think it's their fault. It looks like my Gigabyte GA-X48-DQ6 might be going bad. Getting regular lockups in BIOS and, this morning, no video when I first booted it.
So it's time for a new Beast, and I could certainly use some sane advice on what is an overkill build:
Specifications:
Chassis Model: Cooler Master HAF 932 Processor: Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: EVGA X58 3X SLI (Intel X58 Chipset) (Supports Triple SLI or CrossFire) System Memory: 6GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified by mushkin enhanced (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 1000W Corsair HX (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition) Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 2x (1TB Western Digital (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache) (SATA) (Extreme Speed) Set 1 Raid Options: Configure HDD Set 1 to a Raid 0 Config - Stripe Performance (Requires Two HDDs) Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 2x SLI Quad (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295 1.792GB) (Includes PhysX Technology) Sound Card: Asus Xonar D2X (PCI-Express Slot Based) (Recommended) Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 2: Noctua NH-U12P High Performance Cooler (Compatible With ONLY i7 Processors) Liquid Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a H20: Stage 3 Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Green) Enhancements: LCD NZXT Sentry LX Temperature Display & Fan Controller (Requires Chassis Airflow Upgrade) Boost Processor: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz (Requires Air Cooling Upgrade) Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: Yes, Overclock memory frequency (Includes Memory Fan Kit Installed) Tweak Windows: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (64-Bit Edition) With Windows 7 Upgrade Coupon Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Keyboard: Lycosa Razer Gaming Keyboard Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty --------------
Okay, well, it's not the $10,000 build I saw posted here, but it's got some overkill.
In particular, the dual GTX 295 boards
Pros:
1. Performance & Future proofing - should be more than enough to run any game at their highest specs, particularly Crysis, as well as any future games to come, for several years. I hope.
2. Supposedly they run cooler than the ATI's ( I'm hoping the HAF 932's stock cooling can take care of them - they're not overclocked in this config)
3. Bragging rights
Cons
1. Too powerful for my current monitor, a LG W2361VG, with a 1920x1080 max, display: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=LG+W2361vg&cid=14382145591401096978&os=tech-specs#p
However, I'll eventually (1-2 years from now) be looking to upgrade it for one with a high res.
2. Heat. I'm hoping the 932's stock fans (huge fans) & superior airflow will take care of them. I'm not overclocking them.
3. Obsolescence. This reminds me of the time I bought a second Nvidia 7950 (the previous "two boards in one" solution). I couldn't get them stable on my WinXP platform. Learned later they would never really work right under DirectX9. Then DirectX10 came out, and they became boat anchors (well, one did).
DirectX11 is supposedly around the corner (?). Waiting on stable, reasonably priced systems for bleeding edge components, tho' . . I dunno, is it better to buy at the end of a development cycle, or the beginning?
4. Bleeding edge. DS says they can sell me a system with dual 295's, but can they really? Will they be stable? Will they run Crysis, Bioshock, Fallout 3, and so on without crashes?
I don't mind so much if the dual 296's power goes unused, is overkill, as much as if they were to cause me constant game and system crashes. THAT I mind very much. I want performance, but that desire is #2, beneath stability.
--------------------------
Options
I'm considering dialing it down to dual GTX 285's, overclocking everything, and going liquid cooled. The big problem with LC is, two years down the road, I might be having to maintenence it. Just how hard is it to add coolant, or, even worse, replace a leaky hose or dodgy clamp?
Really debating hard on going LC.
Another benefit of going dual 285's and not 295's would freeing up some funds (if I don't go LC) I could put towards extending the warranty, or getting the Classified mobo, etc.
-----------------
Any input's appreciated, although I'm looking at buying either today or tommorrow. I'm hoping to get some input from Digital Storm also about configuration and stability concerns I have.
Thanks

No editing, hm. Wanted to add: maybe downgrade the video boards, and try to get a better (faster) processor?

there is no future proofing with gpus, its a bad idea to go go withy 2 x 295 now, pay that much money and not even have a dx11 card.
best thing to do is go 2 x 275, it performs better then 1 x 295 and cost less. in a couple of years, upgrade to the gpus that are out then, 2 of those will be much more powerfull then 2 x 295. 2 x 275 will give you all you need to have a smooth game play, with crysis you should be around 50 fps and that should give you the smooth game you want. don't oc anything other then the cpu, the gpus will just give you more heat, you won't notice the difference in performance, and the ram can cause errors. |

Psimon,
Great system you got built! Remember to have a digital camera around when the beast arrives. The folks on the forum don't want to hear about a new system arriving without getting to see some pictures. They can be cruel, but a few pictures will get them in line.
I have been very happy with my dream machine and I am sure you will be also!
Start thinking about how you are going to set up the new beast and stuff like that. Time will slow to a crawl pretty soon but the best way to make it pass is to get the new home ready.

Thanks all.
My system went through Stage 2 to Stage 5 in one day, heh. They put it together quick. It's lookin' like Tuesday or Wednesday.
Unfortunately I don't have a digital camera, so I won't be making a "review" entry. I still can comment, though, surely?

Soooooo . . . I ordered my new system last Thursday (17th); they built it in 2 days, and left it to cook over the weekend.
Then of course I had to call James and tell him I'd decided to go with the higher overclock, GPU overclocks & liquid cooling after all, and I wanted to "upgrade" my order (neither of us knew it was already boxed & getting ready to ship
The new config is #333630
Hearing I wasn't real happy with the glaring red LCD fan in front, they offered to replace it with a stock 230mm (no LED) fan. Of course the top exhaust fan will be replaced by the large radiator and dual Zalman 120's, and the side cage 230mm will be replaced in favor of four more Zalman 120's. Interior lighting will be UV green (as of course will the coolant).
I'll buy a disposable camera to get the pics so I'm not lynched. Edited by Psimon - 21 Sep 2009 at 1:13pm |

so you got liquid cooling and then more fans? why you like a lot of noise? why change the side fans for? you just gonna get more noise.

I wanted the front red LED replaced. So, the side 230mm is going up front, and four Zalmans in the side. If they're the ZM-F3's, their noise level according to spec is 20db +/- 15% up to 34db +/- 10% at full load. If it proves too much I can order a new 230mm from Cooler Master, they're about $20. In any event, I will have years to adjust or replace my rig, fans included Edited by Psimon - 21 Sep 2009 at 4:38pm |

The fans at full load are loud. but most importantly its not needed. that is the biggest problem, if they were needed then I can understand but they are not needed.
now if you don't have them at full load then you will get the same performance as the stock fan so what is the point then? the above is regaurding the 4 fans for the side panel, and btw why didn't you change the front red led 230mm fan with a blue led 230mm fan from cm? |

Ok boss, just trying to pointout to you that they are not needed, people who have tri sli might need the fan upgrade, otherwise its a waste of money.
but its your pc you get what you like, I'm just trying to give you some info, just trying to help. ![]() ![]() Edited by DST4ME - 21 Sep 2009 at 4:50pm |

Thanks!
I'll be honest, bling is important to me too, and the 932's front glaring red LED just didn't rock my world. I wanted a "borg" green for the fan, as well a probably green interior lighting.
As of now, the only lighting the system will have is the green UV for the CPU LC hose/coolant. I suppose if I really want more I could get green interior lighting, but for now I'm going to see how it looks when I receive it. I don't mind subdued lighting, it looks more ominous to my mind.
I wish I'd looked at trim painting. I saw the chassis painting options, and at 259 smackers, stopped looking. Not complaining about it, but that's too pricey for a drab one-color paint job. If it had pics or art, now, that's a different story. Maybe I can hunt down a local artist to do that ( I would, but I can't draw or paint worth a darn). The trim paint jobs are pretty reasonable prices, sorry I missed that.
Trying to think of the new system's name. Everyone uses "Beast"! Actually my current one is Vorpal. Thinking maybe "Adamantite", "Adamantine", or "Adamantium" . . . . . piddling details, I know. I try to squeeze as much pleasure out of spending 3K as I can.

Yeah, I wanted mine to look drop dead sexy..went with max blue LEDs plus had em change the red LED front fan to blue..as well as blue internal lighting, and blue uv liquid! Should look sweet. Went with blue on all the trim as well..accents..screws etc. Didnt waste the money on the auto paint..i like matte finishes my self.
For a name you could always go with HAF something...
thats what im going for... HAF Monster HAF Machine...lol although thats not much of a name...but either way i gotta wait tell i see "my Digital HAF"

heh. I'm chewing my fingernails off waiting for my new rig, very excited about it.
If I hadn't changed my order I'd probably already have it!
As it is I haven't received any new "stage status" emails from DS. It was probably moved to the end of the line, I imagine they're all kinds of busy with new orders. It's only been two days since I changed the order.
Nice siggie btw.
EDIT: Woot!
Ships today or tomorrow I think . . . 3-5 days for delivery . . . maybe Tuesday of next week. Edited by Psimon - 23 Sep 2009 at 1:56pm |

Completed Stage 7
The email I got from Digital Storm:
Processor Temperatures

CPU: Whew. 89c is pretty toasty. That's at full load for hmm, what,15 hours or so I think (just says overnight). 1.35 for the Vcore is pretty good, I think. I was trying to do a bit of OC'ing on my CPU here at home, and I hit the 1.5 "You Shalt Not Pass" barrier pretty early, around 3.6Ghz for my Q6600.

That's the highest temps I've seen (did a search for "Overnight Load") although there's not a lot of posts for comparison. Most go with the Stage 1 and not 2 overclock.
I'm a little worried about that. 89c seems hellishly high for a Frostbite LC system.
DS has shipped it, I mean, they checked off on it.
Here's to hoping it was a typo

its not a typo, but their room is hot, lets see what the temps are in your room temp, if you get it and its 89c then I would give them a call.

I like a cold room, it's usually at 19-20c, at least, that's where I set the AC temp. It'll be colder as winter approaches, when I can finally open two windows and get a draft running through my apartment.
Gonna check the heatsink seating when it arrives,as best I can, too.

Wheeeee, it's here!
Man, is it FAST!
Not that noisy, either, even with the Zalman's. Or maybe the air purifier to my left just drowns it out.
Heh, the e-SATA port in front is awful sweet too, don't have to use USB for my 1TB WD My Book external . . . . I've been transferring files all night, redownloading games from Steam and Impulse, and in general sitting in that warm glow that is a new system.
I bought a crap-tastic $18 digital camera called a Clipster to take some photos. The resolution and picture quality is horrible, but, hey, it was handy taking pics of every page of my current BIOS.
I haven't even got to any temperature testing, although the CPU seems to be running at about 39-40c Idle or barely tasked while I move about the OS.
Still have a lot of software to download & install, benches to run & look at, temp testing . . .lots to do.
Argh. I also forgot, I'm gonna have to upgrade (if I do) before the end of February of next year, so is all this loading & configuring & tuning worth it
Oh, well, eventually I'll write that review - with piccies. Horribly crappy piccies I'll inflict on all of you. Edited by Psimon - 29 Sep 2009 at 12:23am |
