Hello,
Back in June I ordered a system from DSO and with your help the purchase so far is good. *knock on wood*. Now my gf wants to get a new computer for gaming (starcraft 2, diablo 3, Deus Ex 3, Crysis 2)....and so I have a configuration for her, but also, a couple of questions for you guys. Please check the config out and answers my questions below: appreciate it! 523791 http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=523791 1. Back in last year, i chose a i7 930 processor + overclocking it to 960 or something. Now, i see this new processor called i72600k. How good is it ? How is it compared to the i7 930 or 960? Is it in the middle? or is it something that i shouldn't even invest in because it seems like it's something that Intel put together hastily and give it a weird name? But just glancing at it, it seems like it's even better than the i7 950??? 2. What kind of motherboard should she get? Last year i got the EVGA X58 LE Edition SLI (Intel X58 Chipset) (Supports SLI or CrossFire). I just randomly chose the Sabertooth one as you can see... any advice? 3. Back a year ago, the 6gb RAM was standard...now i'm forced to do 8 gb? i mean , it's fine, but wow, really? 4. Powersupply: Do i need the 1000w? Also, should i go a corsair one like i did or just a DSO certified one?? 5. Video card Question 1x GTX 570 or 1x GTX 570 overclocked or 1x GTX 580 or 1x GTX 580 overclocked or DUAL GTX 470??? 6. Cooling: Last year I was told i do not need liquid cooling for my rig and i took your advices. So far so good. I got the Noctua Dual 120mm Fans High Performance Cooler (Compatible With ONLY i7 Processors), which is not avail now... It has instead, the Noctua NH-U12P SE DUAL 120mm fans. How is it ??? should i just get this one? DId i miss anything? THANK YOU SO MUCH! ![]() |

Thank you for your reply DST!
Question:I know nothing about "SLI mobility". From what i have gathered, SLI is simply the ability to have 2 video cards on 1 motherboard instead of the standard 1 vid card on 1 motherboard right? And if what i said above is right, is the ASUS P8P67 Deluxe Mobo you recommended better or the Sabertooth one better? Do both have SLI mobility? Also, how do I figure out what "res" i am running at....*brace myself for newbie question...." Lastly, "when" do i even need liquid cooling? when i do 2 GPU's? Thanks!!!!! |

Liquid Cooling is necessary for pushing your overclock higher than normal. Most games won't benefit much, or at all, from the stage1 overclock to the stage2 which the 2600K is capable. If you live in a place that gets very hot or if your room is usually very warm you may want to consider it.
Regarding SLI, my understanding is if you're going to utilize SLI you need to go with a 9xx series first gen i7. Whether it's not supported with p67 or not I do not know but the general consensus on this forum is that it's a no-no. SLI will greatly increase your video performance. You can google the exact framerate benefits, but, for instance, dual 570's beat a single 580 by a great deal and only costs a little extra in comparison. I can only assume you plan at gaming at 1920x1080 or 1920x1200, I believe a single 570 would be adequate for most games at max rez and a 580 will do even better. SLI will future proof you a bit in the video card department and ensure that games in the future will still be playable at max rez. I find that my crappy 3870x2 still hangs alright for being 3-4 years old now. So I imagine a single card will do amazingly.
You can check your desktop resolution by right clicking your desktop and clicking properties. Your resolution should be in there. If your monitor doesn't support 1920x1080, you may want to consider getting a new one. You can get a pretty nice monitor these days for 200-300 bucks.
Your mobo question remains unanswered with me :(.

you only have one mobo, depending on the type of mobo, you can have upto 3 gpus on it, sli is when you have 2 or more cards working together, if you will. both sabertooth and deluxe have sli ablility but deluxe is better cause it will leave you with more free pci lanes and for $16 more here you can get bluetooth and etc, in short deluxe is the better choice IMO. your res (resolution) is dependent on your monitor, so you want to find out what the native res is for your monitor, you can give us the make/model and we can look it up real quick or you can go to the section where you change res on your pc and see which one is the "recommended" one, that one is the native. You don't need liquid cooling unless you want to go extreme oc, keep in mind that kind of an oc will have a high vcore which is not recommended for 24/7 use. LC has 2 loops, one goes to cpu and then if you want gpu, one will go to gpu/s. @Aroberts0820, a warm room will cause problems for LC system also, LC uses rads and fans on them, fans blowing warm air cause the room temp is warm, is not gonna help with dissipation of heat much. Also things like your psu can get very hot if the room temp is hot and shut the pc down, in short if one's room is that warm, then they have a few issues, LC on gpu/cpu is not gonna solve it/them. as for sli, some p67 mobos do support it, its tri sli/cf that we recommend people go to the x58, otherwise the p67 does dual sli great. Sli does help fps, but on a 60hz monitor, getting more then 60 fps is not really noticable, so its not about getting as many fps as one can, its about getting the amount of fps that you need to play smooth without wasting money on fps that won't be noticed. Wether one needs sli or not depends on their res, games they play and on what settings they want to play those games. going sli does not future proof you in any way, future proof means handing future games with future requierments, todays cards can't do that, today's card can't support future DX, or power needed, try play metro in DX11 with 3870x2 and then we will discuss how future proof sli/cf is. Best way to be future proof is to go with one card now (if that gives you what you need now), but have a system that can handle sli/cf if needed, cause if in the next 2 years you don't go sli, then its time to upgrade to a new future gpu, which will support future requierments. of course 570 sli beats a 580, that because when it counts, the 570 is not that far away for the 580, and with a good oc, you can get 580 performance, so one needs to compare sli 570 to 580, there is pretty much nothing single 580 can do that 570 can't, oc may be needed for some games. Now if somebody comes and says I want to play games like crysis or metro, at 1900 x 1200, we direct them to sli 570 on the deluxe mobo of p67, but when somebody comes and asks about playing games like wow at that res, we direct them to single 570, so we are not against getting sli, we are against throwing money away on performance you will never notice, there are better ways to spend that money and get more performance out of it for a longer period of time. Hope that clears it up a bit.
