I tend to overthink things sometimes so I want to ask about these things to get a better understanding and see if I am here.
How much should I worry about dust/hair etc. around my PC? I have my PC on the floor beside my desk, the floor is typically kept clean being swept about every fortnight. I plan to dust out my PC every 6 months with compressed air. Is this a good idea? Also, is it safe to remove the USB connecting my controller and the jack for my earphones/headphones by just simply plugging them out? I know that with USB's you generally press remove hardware safely or something similar before plugging it out. Edited by Snaike - 17 Jul 2020 at 3:15am |

You should be fine as you are. Most rigs have some kind of mesh in front of the fans that you should keep a close eye on for dust. One of mine is a plastic panel that clips on and another is a magnetic mesh screen on the top. I have an older case than the ones offered now. Mine sits on the floor, and every six months to go inside suits me. I dust off those screens more often. be sure to check for a mesh screen on the very bottom of the case. Some have fans down there.
Headphones can come and go without any issues. |

Welcome to DS. You need to "eject" any usb attached hardware that has memory to avoid issues. (external hard drives, SD memory cards, etc) You can do this by "safely removing" in task bar or "eject" when you right click on the particular hardware icon. I have added magnetic mesh in front of intakes to help with the dust. Enjoy. |

While we are doing this how do those of you reading this feel about removing the GPU before hitting it with canned air, or leave it in place when the six-month cleaning occurs?

Leave in place, for sure. I wouldn't give Murphy's law a chance.

Agree. Only take the gpu out if you are changing it. Might even get dirt in track if out.

My PC case is also on the floor but I manage to keep it clean just like you do. I've had no problem so far.
So don't worry dude |
