I saw the Gateway FDH2401 in person and it looks great, but I keep reading horrible reviews about it. Maybe its because people don't like the glossy look.

I will also be getting a 24" when I order after Nehalem release, I know virtually nothing about them.

I keep reading about poor angle visibility with TN panel.  And since most lower cost panels are apparently TN I am in a bit of a dilemma.

Newegg reviews on TN panels seem kinda brutal.

Are they really that bad?

This will be a major decision for me.  If I am going to spend a ton for a DSO, I want a good display.

To be honest, I would suck it up and get a non TN panel.  That is, if you can't handle the viewing angles.  There is a reason they are cheaper priced than non TN panels.  I tried out a Samsung 245BW for a few days and wound up returning it to Best Buy.  Sure, it was a 5ms screen but unless your eyes are lined up with the upper portion of the screen when you're sitting you will see that the screen will look darker towards the top.  I really didn't want to have to think about how I was sitting and adjusting myself the whole time I was using my monitor trying to enjoy a game.  It bothers some people, and to some it doesn't really matter.

I went with an LG L246WP and I couldn't be happier - it's an M-PVA panel.  It's a 8ms screen but that doesn't mean there is ghosting... in fact, there is none at all that I have seen.  Although the price tag was a bit more, I still got it for under $600.

My advice is very simple. Do not rely on the advice of others when shopping for either monitors or speakers if you have the capability to get yourself to a Bestbuy or Microcenter or other brick and mortar retail center for computer parts and accessories. Everyone's eyes and ears are different, and the way we percieve the same information will vary greatly from one person to the next. Some people couldn't pinpoint the differences between a $250,000 reference audio setup and a $500 Sony compact stereo, while others could probably tell you if someone switched out the patch cords in that imaginary reference setup. The only real judge of any type of device designed as an interface with one of your senses is you.

I have question. My screen is the apple cinema display 30''.  The response time is 16ms.  Sometimes I notice tearing on certain games (like the intro movie on crysis)- is this due to the game or the screen?

Possibly an SLI issue. Try disabling the SLI and watching the same intro again.

That's what it lists on the apple store site. I was a bit suprised as well...maybe I should look into a more suitable gaming replacement or is that extra 8-11ms really worth it?

Although, I bet I could find a better contrast ratio now too.

probably a waste of money overall... but i like wasting money.

I wholeheartedly agree with Tyler! I've listened to the best audio systems in the world,(well, most expensive system was retail $1.5 million US) and while some people can't tell the differences in systems, others can. Also, I met many people who truly loved the sound of what I can only describe as gawdawful and they didn't like the more musical sound of my system. So, it's all in personal preference. The same is true in how we visually perceive things.

P.S. Tyler, I spent years writing a column on interconnects and cables, changing them in and out of my system quite frequently! Yes, I always heard a difference, but most designed compromised one aspect of sound for another. It did teach me that not all engineers are as good at Physics as others... I can't believe how many engineers try to bend the laws of Physics to make a "new" product.

I highly recommend the Sceptre X24WG-1880P.    www.sceptre.com

They are so good, I have two of them.

Can usually find them for under $400 too.

If I lived in a place where I could buy a unit and take it back if I did not like--all would be good.   Problem is I live in the sticks and I will have mail order.

What I am afraid will happen is that a display may seem great for a while then I will notice problems, then I'm stuck.

So I will most likely go with a non TN display just to be on the safe side.
