I know windows comes with a built-in backup function, but I was wondering if there is any other software out there that would be better.
Any thoughts would be great... I don't mind paying the 40-50 bucks. |

there is no better backup than just making hard copy DVDs of sensitive files. plus it saves you from having to buy or install anything, and lets you reformat more easily

I use a program called Genie Backup Manager and I swear by it... I run multiple different jobs to back up different parts of the system and save them to an external hdd as a primary and then also a smaller external hdd once a month (it resides in a firesafe the rest of the month).
Have never had a problem with it and the UI is nice and clean (I think) |

Try Handy Backup, it's easy and reliable backup software for Windows. I have used several backup programs for years, and I recommend Handy Backup.
Hope it will work for you too. |

The trouble with backup software is you never get to find out if it worked until it's too late. I'll vote for Acronis TrueImage. It has restored dead machines of mine many times. It can back up your boot drive from Windows while other "stuff" is going on, or it can boot your machine from the CD, under Linux I believe, when things really get ugly.

Hey, Ed! On the other hand, some things never change.

Good to see you, Drew. Yes yes, why would we want things to change. I just got used to the way it is right now. I'm getting too old to change, and quite frankly, just don't wanna.
So, you're thinking of going W7. I've been holding out on that until I see more people having less issues. You know, new OS; bugs; kinks; drivers, etc. However, it does seem that W7 is settling down. I've been running Vista Ultimate for a while now and have been very pleased with it, however, I'm ready to make the jump also. I'm surprised you're still running a 32 bit OS. Just making the jump to a 64 bit OS makes a big difference. I'm like you, from the day I received my DS rig, and we ordered about the same time, I have had no issues. I've run games on this thing on the highest res (1920x1200) and haven't had any problems with it. I'm still running my 8800 GTX and it's pumping strong. I did, however, lose my overclock (3.15) when I updated my BIOS on my MOBO. I think I'm at 2.4 now. At the time when you and I purchased I don't think DS was commonly saving to the BIOS so you could go back and retrieve the overclock, so I've just left it alone. Too be honest, I haven't seen a difference from 2.4 to 3.1. This rig has been a work horse though and I'm getting, actually have had for a while now, the itch to upgrade to something current. Reading here on the forums is like a little kid sitting on the sidelines wanting to play ball. I REALLY want to play ball! I'll most likely just update the OS to W7 first and drink that coolaid for awhile. I really can't justify building a whole new system for the sake of having a brand new system though. I'm not a big gamer anymore, so it doesn't make economical sense for me to do it. I'm going to need to wait until this rig just pisses on my leg before I build again. The Acronis program has been quite a nice utility for me, too. I back-up to an external and I've used it twice to save my ass. Good program and glad to have it. Good to see you and I can still make you a good deal on the hole in my back yard if your interested. Just wanted to throw that out there in case you're in the market for one. ![]() Edited by EdH63 - 28 Oct 2010 at 9:46am |

Likewise. As far being too old to change, you're never too old to want to be 20 pounds lighter and 20 years younger. That's the only change I'm looking for these days. Oh yeah, that and Legalization.
Out of eight working computers in the house, only my two are still on XP. I don't feel a strong compulsion to upgrade, but I do want to go 64-bit, cause I'm finally starting to feel the 2 Gig RAM limitation. Once you drink that Kool-Aid, you might as well switch to Win7 at the same time. I'll keep the second XP machine around for a while as insurance.
As I recall, you got caught by the 680i mobo/NVIDIA driver problems from awhile ago, right? Ah, those were the days. My machine has been overclocked 20% from day one, although of course most of the time it's running 20% below stock speed because of the idle step down in the system clock. The computer industry's biggest problem is that the CPUs of three+ years ago are still fast enough for just about anything. In three years I've killed a couple of disk drives and changed the video card, but that's it.
Your problem is obvious, you need to start gaming again.
Like with Win7, I haven't felt the need to upgrade CPUs. Sure i7s are at least somewhat faster, but how would I know without benchmarking? Looks like Sandybridge will make a big enough difference though to be irresistible.
See? Ya should have gotten liquid cooling.
Yes, all hail TrueImage!
Not until you come to your senses and agree to cover the installation cost

Macrium Reflect for me, essentially a Imaging program that's free, and NOT a gimmick program like the others, lol.
Note - FREE version is here Well, only for personal use, which is why it's free. If you wanna go enterprise, you have to pay. Edited by ablahblah - 28 Oct 2010 at 6:55pm |
