Greetings all
My new DS rig is set to arrive on 1-8-08. Before I start playing games, surfing the web, opening emails, and opening it up for all kinds of bad adware, spyware, viruses, hackers etc... I was wondering what the DS community felt was the best way to protect it? I have read tons of reviews and gotten some advice, but I'm taking the question to people who use the same brand rig as I am going to be using. I have come up with these options from the information I have gathered:
Eset
Kaspersky
AVG
I am looking for a total package type program that I can get loaded and not have to worry about so I can enjoy my gaming.
Thanks
P.S. I will post my review, under the review section, with the stats, and maybe some pictures, when my rig comes in.

ESET. You will never use any other security software once you use ESET.

Firewall
Comodo Firewall Pro Arguably the best freeware firewall out there (and it doesn't rape your system as far as resources go). http://www.download.com/Comodo-Firewall-Pro/3000-10435_4-10775568.html?tag=lst-6-4 Antivirus Avast Definitely the best freeware anti-virus software out there (yes, it beats AVG). http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edition/3000-2239_4-10780115.html?tag=lst-6-1 Edited by syn - 07 Jan 2008 at 12:52am |

i havent used any anti - anything software for almost a year now,
use xp, windows firewall off. I clean my system regularly with crap cleaner and hijack this.
the only viruses ive had we ones i got while i was running the newest norton over a year ago, there were 2 crappy little IE attackers and then one full on attack where i had to spend a few hours cleaning up, nothing major and way cheaper than 80 bucks for a year...

im going to garentee that my system is a 6 year old dell with 512 ram that still runs like a dream because i take impeccable care of it
you will find absoultely 0 malware, spyware, adware, unused programs, etc on this machine.
different strokes for different folks, if you dont know how to watch over your machine then pay up and youll do fine.

Spyware Protection = 100% free. Firewall = 100% free. Anti-Virus = 100% free. How are you "watching over your machine" without ANY protective software installed? Do you manually go through your tens of thousands of files daily, and check their names/values against those of spyware? If so: my had is off to you, because you're obviously some kind of superhuman. If not: then you aren't doing anything besides taking unnecessary risk. Sorry, but running without virus/spyware protection and a firewall isn't "impeccable care", and quite frankly your false sense of security is hilarious. |

Its not unnessesry risk if, as i said, the only notable 3 attacks happened while i was paying for anti virus software. My system is fine and all of your completely free software isnt going to change that. Its not worth the resource consumption to me, nor the hassle. And, as i said, 6 years and Im still runnin hot. The system isnt even slightly slow considering its components.
But hey, if thinking you use all that software makes you better off than me, allows you to sleep better, then by all means please do. Just get that my way or the high way additude back in the cage right after you take your foot out of your mouth. The fact that this old guy is still running strong more than proves my points. And leaves no reason to discuss this further. Edited by !ender_ - 07 Jan 2008 at 3:32am |

Pissing contests aside, I'll throw my hat into the ring in support of Avast here. Good, Free, Updates frequently - and easily disabled when you're being bogged down by the on-access scanners =)

Yeah, I've been using Avast for a number of years... it's a good one. I Use the Windows Firewall that comes with the OS... it's sufficient. My Linksys Router also has a firewall. I would use something.
You can't rate one users experience from another's on this kind of thing. So many variables that float when it comes to how and why you would get an attack. I wouldn't go spend a bunch of money, especially a monthly fee, for anti-virus protection. If a hacker wants in, he will get in regardless of what you use. Attempts made on our piddly little systems are commonly mistaken. Most "attempts" are merely passes across your port by surfing and the software recognized the activity. We tend to get a false impression of how"well" our software is helping us. No one wants in your system for anything unless you have pissed someone off on the internet and they grabbed an IP and started their little scheming to get to you. |

indeed, i think that edH6 said it best for sure
at the least, a few free scanning programs,
adaware
spybot
crap cleaner
and hijackthis for more advanced users/problems
and you should be good to go, BUT on the other hand, if you dont remember to scan stuff like that very well and you visit "risky" sites often enough for it to be a problem, any system from DSO should be more than able to handle an extra background process or 2
- on the complete other hand -
an ounce of prevention:
ie external HD that you power up once a week to load important or sensitive files on to will smash the security of any paid or free program. As edh6 said, if someone -really- wants you, they will get you, so having all your important stuff to just xfer in 2 minutes after a fresh reformat is unparalleled. not to mention it can protect you from hardware issues, and depending how you use it, allow you to take over a free comp at a friends house in minutes
as far as backing up goes:
keep all important, large, or paid for install files
config files for games and messengers, saved gaves if youre that type of gamer
personal files, (ANYTHING that can not be downloaded should be backed up somehow, somewhere)

Oh, and by the way, DS, my "piddly little systems" remark was not intended to diminish the mac daddy systems you guys produce. It was merely a comparative reference to our systems vs. a CIA or FBI data bank. Hackers going to these systems are many times surfing by our systems ports activating protocol in our software. When you look at all the "attempts"made in your log, much of that isn't even literal attempts made on your system.

Looking at the software and looks like it kicks ass. Is it annoying and bugs you like Norton does? |

It is by far less annoying than Norton.
Before you purchase, you can try the trial to see if you like it.. |

The scary thing here is that I'm thinking like Bill. Thought of doing the same thing when I saw the forum topic. Anyhow... For those of you that own DS systems, have any of the security suites mentioned above created a performance hit on your computers? Haven't purchased my DS system yet, but I know Norton sucks up resources on my system.

Comodo firewall is very 'lite' and only uses ~7mb of memory.
All anti-virus programs are going to impact your performance when they're running, so they should be disabled while gaming. |
