Here is what I am looking at for a secondary gaming system. I may add a second vid card down the road. I am not interested in liquid cooling this system.
What would be the most beneficial set up for RAM including overclocking for this setup? increase to the 1066, staying 4GB, staying with the 800, but pumping to 8GB? I would do a modest amount of multitasking with this system, but probably no where near as much as some. (demanding game, browser, ventrilo, itunes, along with the OS basics on average) Secondly, what sort of overclocking could I expect, again, this is a secondary system for a teenager to play along with me, so we are not looking at liquid cooling this sytsem, just the great air flow with the HAF and some upgraded heatsink. maximum overclocks that would be achieved:
800mhz ram = 400 * 8.5 = 3.4GHz 1066mhz ram = 533 * 8.5 = 4.5GHz Note that these figures are not guarantees. Just that the overclock will fall in-between 2.8GHz and the above figures. |

Thanks Skyr, that gives me a ballpark.
Can you address the quantity issue? With what I have listed for needs/uses, I am thinking of going with the 4GB 1066, as opposed to doing 8GB of the 800? I don't see an option listed for going 8GB with the 1066, but maybe that is wasted memory anyway. |

4gb would be enough for the avg teenager use.
now if you were to have 3 WoWs opened, 20+ tabs in your browser, sony vegas, and all the other goodies than 8gb might be needed -.^ |

Thanks Skyr,
thats what I needed to hear. Prompted a further question: I've never been able to handle multiple instances of these games on a single system before.. Is it possible with a set up like this to run double WAR or AoC, split the games onto two separate displays, have dual keyboard/mouse input and have it all run smoothly on a single box for 2 players? If so, are there things in the build that would need to be done to accommodate such a feat? |

Domain just so you know, I have never seen a q9550 on a 780i board on this forum get higher then 3.8 and that was once and that system ended-up being sent back cause it was not stable.
with that setup you can actually expect to get is between 3.2 and 3.4 and that is with liquid cooling. if you go with the 1066 that is a mistake and you will not see the difference. What skyr forgot to mention you is that you are not going no where anywhere near those numbers without liquid cooling. 4GB should be enough to run all your games, never tried 2 games at the same time, so I can't tell you about 2 at a time. here is my idea: you can add another card down the road if you like or you can raise the PSU back to 1000w and go with GTX 280 that will bring the price to around 2700, but you wont' notice the difference between my build: here you go Ticket# 189985 --- Price: $2565 (To see this build click here) Copy of Specifications: Chassis: Cooler Master HAF 932 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Interior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Power Supply: 860W PC Power & Cooling (ESA Edition) (Dual SLI Compatible) Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz (1333MHz FSB) (12MB Cache) Motherboard: nVidia 790i Ultra Core 2 Quad (nForce 790i Ultra SLI) (DDR3 Only) System Memory: 4GB DDR3 1333MHz OCZ Card Reader: - No Thanks Hard Drive 1: 300GB Western Digital VelociRaptor (10K RPM) (16MB Cache) (Extreme Speed) Hard Drive 2: - No Thanks Raid Option: - No Thanks Hard Drive 3: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) (LightScribe Edition) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Wireless Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 896MB (Includes PhysX Technology) TV Tuner: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: Air Cooled Stage 2 (Silent Artic Cooling Heat-sink Upgrade (Copper Heatpipes) Internal Lighting: Blizzard Internal Lighting (Red Edition) (Cold Cathode Tubes) Modifications: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Yes, Overclock the processor as much as possible with complete stability Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: Yes, Overclock memory timings (Includes Memory Fan Kit Installed) Tweak Windows: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) (For Enthusiasts) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks LCD Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty Edited by DST4ME - 02 Oct 2008 at 3:13pm |

Thanks DST-
Does your estimate of overclocking take account of air cooling only, or is the 3.2 to 3.4 range dependent on liquid cooling as well? |

I am getting 3.46 on a 9450 with just air cooling, completely stable.
With a 9550 you should be able to do better - it just depends on the luck of the draw with your chip.

lets say you are one of the lucky ones and not the norm tom.
Did it come from DS with that speed or did you tweak it? |

Reading through various forums I agree I am on the lucky side of normal - although anywhere from 3.2 to 3.6 on air seems common for a 9450 on air. The 9550 I would think could do better than the 9450, but I haven't really done any digging.
I did tweak my OC. It came at 3.2 from DSO, but everything was just set on auto so I don't think they spent any time on it. It only took very minor tweaking to get to 3.46.

Right, that is what I have seen from DS, I think its important to point out to the new people that dont' know OC that your system and any system can do better OC if you know what you are doing.
around here for q9450 from DS I have seen 3.2 to 3.4 q9550 3.4 to 3.8 most times its been the lower number of the 2. |
