artic silver 5 is very old, outdated, outshined by the newer stuff.
I have used a lot of MX-2 easy to apply, good performance, MX-4 easy to apply better performance, longer lasting.
There are many other companies that make T.I.M.'s, some are poor, some are good, some are great. lol

So go with MX-4? For CPU? or is there a better brand for CPU use?

Overall, thermal performance, ease of use, durability, MX-4 is at the top.  If a different brand gets a .5C better temp, but is harder to use, and you get a poor mount, it will perform much worse than the MX-4, plus if it does not perform well over time, then what good is it really?

Justin,

Using MX-4 on 1366, which application method do you prefer for that particular thermal paste? I've never used MX-4 but I'm going to be using it on a new cpu here soon, just curious.

a thin line, 2/3 the length of the CPU, in the center. for most CPU's I run the line perpendicular to the writing on the CPU

Also, it is a very good idea to take the cooler/water block off and check the mount. Most people put on way too much, but it depends on the type of cooler, and some other variables, but it is always a good idea to check it, if it looks bad, clean up the TIM off both surfaces, and re-do. keep trying until you get a good one.
