Good question! Well, for my 2-year film project, I used iMovie on the iMacs in Georgetown University's library, and it was excellent. However, the implication is not only do you require a Mac, but it also takes a lot of getting used to.

What comes closest to filling the dark void inside of me was Adobe Premier Elements 4. The interface, while also taking some getting used to, is aesthetically intuitive, and neatly organised. It's kind of a iMovie copy without shame. Effects wise, it falls short of iMovie, but in terms of the organisation of scenes and frames, as well as the various layering options for audio and video, it really is a hot program to have. It chews up RAM something fierce, but that shouldn't be a problem. It also comes at a high price, but there are ways to circumvent that, amirite *Takes up cutless and prepares to swashbuckle.*
