I
picked up my new Bolt 3 from my local FEDEX Office 2 days ago and brought it to
my house. My other 2 DS computers did not have any damage from shipping by UPS
or FEDEX so I was keeping my fingers crossed that this one would not have any
damage either. Here is a picture of my boxed Bolt when I got it home. The box
only had a few very minor scuff marks on it. FEDEX must of handled it with kid
gloves. I think one thing that might of helped with this is that I ordered my
Bolt with the glass side panel so DS put a "Fragile Glass" sticker on
the box.
I carried it up to my 2nd story office and started to un-box it. Every piece was wrapped in dense foam. On top was the DS "extra parts and personalized notebook" box. Here is everything that came in the DS box. The glass side panel is not shipped attached to the Bolt but must be attached after unpacking. It is shipped in the same box as the computer but inside it's own foam sleeve. What is this! The Bolt is shipped inside it's own fabric bag with the Digital Storm logo on the side. Time to put on the glass side panel. I had to attach the bottom bracket too. Up onto my desk it goes with the right side showing. Plug everything into the back and we are almost ready to turn this bad boy on. It's ALIVE .... It's ALIVE (plagiarized from Dr. Frankenstein) I have played with the interior color controls a little and, (I never thought I would say this but) I think I like the dark purple. First impressions: What a fantastic computer! - and it is beautiful to look at! I have had it up and running for about 48 hours and not one problem has shown up. I did notice one thing though, the ASUS Strix GTX 980 Graphics Card had a notice paper that said the fans on the card would only spin at start up and when temperatures reached a predetermined point. It is strange to not see the fans spinning. They spin infrequently. It is quiet too. Not as quiet as my DS Slade but quieter than any other computer I have owned. The fans for the radiator are all that I can hear so that is only a slight hum. Thanks Digital Storm for building me such an amazing and beautiful computer (again). I think I can chalk this up as another successful purchase. |

WOW!!!!
Nice Dakota nice. LOVE the PURPLE!!! That's giving me some ideas for my next system. I'm jealous. Did they give me a cool sleeve for my Behemoth? Noooooooo. Guess certain "systems" don't get nice covers? Umm like laptop sleeves. I kinda like seeing the video card that way. It's different. |

Thanks for the comment Arkansas Woman. You know how us guys really like to hear you women say anything we have is "sexy". And thanks to all of you others that made nice comments about my "freakin' sexy" purple Bolt 3. Does everyone think I should edit my post title to read; "Un-boxing and first impressions of my freakin' sexy purple Bolt 3"? Maybe I should do a poll. |

I'm with you bprat22, purple was the last one I tried as I was cycling through the colors. I was waiting for some software to install onto the SSD and I did not want to leave the computer. (It always seems to happen to me when I leave the computer that the install comes to a stop because it wants some input from me before it will finish the install.) I thought I would take this chance to use the DS software to see the different interior lighting choices. Some of the interior colors looked ugly but most just looked ok. If one of the colors would of looked good I probably would not of even tried purple and just used that color. But once I tried purple it just jumped out at me and as Arkansas Woman said; it is sooo sexy. |

Hey Steve and Alex, I think that DS should do an ad photo shoot of a Bolt 3 with purple interior lighting. People (at least the ones here on the DS forum) think it is super sexy/cool! and

Got to do something about the white window in the Swiftech H220X. It really distracts from the look. Swiftech has red, blue and green windows available as an accessory. Unfortunately, no Purple. Any color would be better than white.

Ok Alex, you'll ask the tech guys to come up with a solution for the white cooler window. Could you ask them to look into a retro fix for us early adopters of the new Bolt 3. I also think it distracts but for the life of me I can't think of a solution. |

Thanks for the nice comment Cougar. Everyone seems to really like the purple. After 7 days I still just stare and am mesmerized. I still can't believe that I like that color so much. I am really not a purple sort of guy. Nothing else I own is purple. My girlfriend loves it and told me today; "You'll just have to get over it." So I guess I will because there is no way I'm changing it. I did not expect the Bolt to come in a bag (or sleeve, as RPG'er called it) and I want to figure out some way to use it since it seems cool to me too. It is way too big for my laptop (RPG'er said she wished her DS Behemoth came in a nice sleeve similar to what my Bolt came in). If anyone can think of a use for it let me know. The Bolt is a SFF computer but it is too large to be portable. (I can't slip it inside the bag and take it over to a friend's house.) I'm just drawing a blank on what use I could have for it. |

Hi Dakota Red, The fix that Swiftech has is to disassemble the pump and replace the plastic window with a different color one. They say it won't void the warranty but they won't warrant leaks after the change. They sell the new window. From Swiftech: "5-5-15 - NEW accessory release 3 colored windows (Red, Blue, and Green) are now available for the integrated reservoir as a DIY accessory solution. Disassembly of the reservoir is required, and product warranty will not be voided however, Swiftech will not guarantee the product for leaks once it has been disassembled by the user. The colored windows are available individually in the accessories section." You might also change the liquid to a colored liquid but if there is any space in the reservoir then that part might be white. Frank |

I wish there was an easy way, but there really isn't unless you want to simply turn off the LED. If you wish to do that, there is a connector hidden on the right side door at the top which is a 2 pin connection, if you disconnect it, you can turn off the LED. |

Thank you Alex because I think turning off the LED might be the only solution. There is no way I'm going to disassemble the tank and take a chance of springing a leak. Also the available colors don't seem to compliment the dark purple that I have for my interior color. Although red might work since my tubing is red. Now Alex where is this 2 pin connector? On the right side door or on the back side of the mobo? You say "hidden", does that mean it can not be seen till other wires are pushed aside. At the top - right - center - or left? I assume there are not many 2 pin connectors at the top but I don't want to disconnect the wrong one if there are several in the same area. Thank you again Alex for helping me figure this out. |

Hi Dakota Red,
Since the window is lighted could you put something like colored cellophane/plastic over the window? The light would highlight the color of the cellophane/plastic. Frank Edited by FrankW - 29 May 2015 at 4:44pm |

You're welcome. The challenge is to locate that connector. It's somewhere tucked on the right side panel, the wire will be coming from the Swiftech cooler unit. There isn't really any location where you will see it but it's a 2 pin male/female connection.

Hi FrankW, At first I thought the same as you. A little strip of cellophane/plastic over the window would do it, but then I thought "I have no idea where I could find any." And also the white window is very close to the glass side window and I am pretty sure it would look like colored cellophane was taped on top of the window. Maybe I'll stop by a Party or Craft Store and see what I can find. If I do find something to try I'll take pictures and ask everyone if it looks good. If it doesn't I hope you let me know that too. |

Ok Alex, I think I understand. The 2 pin connector is on the right side panel and not the backside of the mobo. Since it comes from the cooler I'll try to trace it starting there. I'm pretty busy this weekend but I'll try to look for it some time next week. |

Just me, but I like a white for some contrast and different highlight on the reservoir.

Hi Dakota.
I don't know how easy it is to get to your reservoir. On my rig it's right by the plexiglass. I didn't like the clear fluid in my reservoir so changed it to neon yellow. I like it but nobody else even notices. I used Feser dye. Drops added to the water in the reservoir. http://www.frozencpu.com/products/21404/ex-liq-91/Feser_View_UV_Dye_-_UV_Purple.html?tl=g30c103s185 From FrozenCPU and it's purple. Just an idea. |

Oh, I really like your idea. Now all I have to do is look and see how easy it is to get to the reservoir and how easy it will be to add the dye without making a mess. No way do I want to get liquid on computer parts. |

I can see where you are coming from bprat22 but the color is not a true white. The LED lighting is white but the light shining through the window comes out a light grey. It almost looks like the liquid is not totally clear or the window is not clear. Something else that plays into this is the glass side panel is smoked glass and not clear glass. For those of you that don't know that term, smoked glass comes in 2 shades. A light grey shade and a bronzed shade. It is like a very light tint to your car windshield. My Bolt came with a bronze tint to the side glass panel. I don't know if the tinted glass makes the window appear greyish or not. I might have to take the side window off and see if that makes a difference. |

Thank you for the nice comments. I guess I am a purple lover. I don't know when I got converted from the Light Side to the Dark (purple) Side but I'm sure I will have to pay for this. (just like Anakin Skywalker had to) I spend a lot of time in my office so it has to be comfortable for me. I think this beautiful Bolt sitting on my desk really classes the joint up. |
