Budget:2k-2.5k
Expectations: 1) Minimal maintenance; (seek to avoid hunting down drivers or performing esoteric maintenance repairs) 2) Occasionally would lug this device to work. (Have peripherals there so it would just be the case + powercord) 3) Coming from a Mac w/ limited game selection; hoping to jump into a sea of games... broad compatability w/ games from 2010 to 3-5 years from now. 4) Playing games at 40+ FPS at at least medium-high on a single monitor. Usage: Primarily gaming (solo): Elder Scrolls, Borderlands 2, Call of Duty type games etc. May become interested in gaming multiplayer later as PC games have a larger pool of players. Other than a browser; I don't plan to run any other apps on this machine. Special Needs: Occasional transport to and from work. Saved Ticket #: Looking @ Bolt level IV (substituting the Titan GPU for cheaper GPU (680 or 780 GTX) Specifications: I guess the biggest question is about the GPU. The configurator lists GTX 680 2/4gb as "Ultimate" options which can save me roughly 400-600$. I would have thought the 780 would have been superior but it only "better/best" I've seen many people suggest the 780 is a poor man/smart man's Titan? I don't do any photoshop or video editing so I don't think I'll need the Titan's power for the gaming? Or do I? Ideally I'd like to save $ to play games now and then in a year or two update the GPU as needed. How easy is it for a lay person to change out the GPU later down the road? How loud/noisy is this system? If I'm using it in the office will it sound like a vacuum? Any other comments or feedback? Anyone else transport the Bolt back/forth? The two other systems I'm considering is the newer X51 (w/ Haswell + SSD -> $1.8k but only has a 670 GPU) or Origins Chronos. The Chronos seems a bit bulkier for transport to be honest. I'm not keen on building my own system esp. b/c I want a smaller case/system. I'm open to other suggestions. |

Get the 780 it's Titan-like performance for a lot less and it just crushes everything else.I have heard that Bolt is a pretty quiet system though you might want to check review to be sure. I would definitely go with the Bolt out of those other systems because DS in my opinion has the best customer support out of those companies.

I agree with Keoyi... The 780 is 90% of the Titan's performance for about 75% of the price.
The Bolt, from independent computer mags reviews and customer feedback on the forums, is quiet and performs great. DS does it right. One of the first reviews complained of the power supply being a bit noisy and DS jumped on it and went with a Gold psu to correct the issue.

Hello ATXrds and welcome!
I'm just going to add a couple of points to those already shared above. 1. For drivers, you won't have any issues beyond the standard updating from time to time. Digital Storm uses components from manufacturers such as Asus, EVGA, etc. So no worries about searching the bowels of the interweb for some 5th tier company you've never heard of. I've had no problems keeping my drivers for my Digital Storm PC up to date. You will likely have to update them occasionally, but that is just a static issue with PC gaming. 2. If you want to move around a desktop, then look no further than the Bolt. In fact, whats really nice about the Bolt (compared to some competitors models) is that the PSU is inside of the chasis. So all you have to lug around is the Bolt and a power cord, nada mas. 3. By and large game compatibility comes down to the ole' Windows. Sure, some drivers work better than others, and occasionally certain cards just seem to loathe certain games, but in my experience the OS will be the main limitation with older games. That being said, Windows has improved on this A LOT since the Vista days when even Microsoft games threw fits (Massive green blobs in Age of Kings, anyone?). Hardware wise, I think you will be absolutely fine in your time range. I'm playing much older games on my DS rig just fine, and 2.5 years in I am still maxing games at 1920x1200 (and I do mean maxing). 4. You'll likely get more than 40fps, depending on the monitor and game settings. But with a standard resolution (somewhere in the range of 1920x1200ish) you'll have no problems with your 40fps goal, with possible a few minor exceptions that are more due to poorly optimized games rather than your hardware. 5. Go with the 780. Sure the Titan still sits at the tip of the ole' GPU pile, but the 780 is far enough up its proverbial butt that its easy to forget where one ends and the other begins, until you consider the price difference between the two. There are a few instances where the Titan is worth it, but from what I can gather from your post, you don't need that extra little bit of productivity power. 6. Not going to lie, as bprat mentioned, the Bolt was originally a noisy little doo-dad. But no longer, if I am not mistaken the Bolt is on Revision 3. That means Digital Storm actually listened to consumers (Imagine that! ) and fixed things. Now its using a specially designed PSU, I believe one originally intended for server-related functionality, that is apparently super quiet. In fact, Brad McCarty at TNW calls it "whisper quiet". So I wouldn't be too concerned about the noise. Plus, I haven't seen anyone mentioning it here on the forums for some time. |

Thanks for all the replies. I'd seen some discrepancies in reviews regarding noise/heat; I understand now why people are saying it's quiet.
2 other questions: 1) Initially for gaming, it seemed that Windows 7 was the answer. Now that 8's been out for a while and is stable, I've seen suggestions that it has better performance. Should I go for Win 7 or Win 8. Hoping that games will be compatible with both OS especially ones upcoming later this year? 2) Hard drive options: Lvl IV bolt comes w/ 120 SSD/1TB HD combination. I figure the OS will take up 30gb which should leave me plenty of space to install games. Not sure if I need the 1 TB HD as I don't wish to keep photos/emails etc. Is it better then to have 1 240 SSD or two 120 SSD? |

Windows 7 will be around for some time and is still the best option for gamers. If you want Windows 8, wait until 8.1 comes out.

Thanks again for all the help. Windows 7 it is.
BTW, on the bolt's home page video, he opens up the bolt and it looks pretty neat/accessible. Is it really that straightforward to remove/exchange Hard drives? In that case may just stick w/ the base setup 120GB SSD/1TB HD and change out the 1TB HD after it fails down the road? (I've had bad luck w/ hard drives). |

I haven't had the pleasure of diving into a Bolt, but it does look very easy to swap/add drives. It appears that they stack and all the cabling is right there. The whole Bolt system looks tight but fairly easy to upgrade.

ATXrds,
The bolt can hold 1x 2.5" drive and 1x 3.5" drive, or 2x 2.5" drive. So as your storage needs increase, you can swap in a 2TB+ drive. Also, Windows 7 will be supported until 2020 or so, you can stick with it. If you do go with Windows 8, the 8.1 update will be dropping later this year, in the meantime, you can use programs like Classic Shell or Start8 to have the system boot straight to Desktop with a Start Menu. |

I love my bolt and I have a Titan and it was cheaper than $2.5k The titan while not crazy loud, is not really quiet. When doing normal windows stuff, its very reasonable. When gaming the fan kicks in and its noticeably louder. I always use headphones so I dont notice it all but those who use speakers might |
