    Posted: 06 Jun 2013 at 3:48pm
This will be a little stream-of-consciousness but I'm wondering a few things about the Bolt as I finalize my config.

Budget: Around $2k including monitor and a few peripherals

Expectations: Single 24" monitor gaming at 1920x1080 resolution on high or ultra settings

Usage: Gaming, occasional remote work through citrix, home finance, web surfing

1) Will the i5-3570k overclocked CPU be sufficient for at least the next few years to support gaming? I don't see the need to spend more on 4th generation processors if they won't result in noticeable gaming improvements.

2) Any recommendations on the SSD between Corsair, Samsung, etc? I've heard good things about Samsung but wanted to get additional input.

3) Is 8 GB DDR3 RAM enough for gaming?

I have a kid on the way right now Excited so my build is a little on the conservative side. I just want to make sure I'm not creating bottlenecks right off the bat.

Thanks in advance!

That is a real nice build.      For gaming, the 3570k chip with 8gb ram is all you need.    And the new gtx 770 will play great on that monitor.

I've never looked into SSD so others might chime in.

Looks great and good bang for the buck. Good luck.

To the point of SSDs, I'd recommend the Samsung 840 series if you are looking for some of the best read/write speeds of this generation. If you are looking for the least performance degradation, then I'd go for the Intel 520 series.

Thanks for the advice there. I think I value lower performance degradation more than better read/write. And the cost ($8) is negligible.

Thanks! I see the lvl 4 build has a 16 gb ram config so adding more down the road shouldn't be an issue if necessary. Gaming seems to be more and more reliant on the GPU so the 770 should keep me on top of things for quite a while. Big%20Smile

Pulled the trigger!
I requested in the "comments" section that DS make sure Windows 7 and all drivers are up-to-date because I know people are sometimes particular about their drivers. Is this something they will normally do? And is there anything else I should be requesting along these lines to plug-and-play out of the box?

Anybody have recommendations about what I should be requesting as far as Windows 7 service packs, driver updates, etc. that will help make my rig ready to go out of the box?

Congrats on the Bolt.  Nice. Big%20Smile

The rig will be ready to go when you get it.   Chances are you will see Windows wanting to update whatever came out since DS updated their server/rack.  You can put updates on manual to control when and what.   Same with the graphics card.    It might not be the latest, depending on when Nvidia released the last one, but if its working I wouldn't rush into updating it.  Some updates go real smooth and others have BSOD, etc until they roll back to an older version.

I don't think DS custom loads updates by request, etc but does it in bulk, so to speak.  If I'm wrong then Alex will correct.

Good Luck. Big%20Smile

We don't usually perform Window's updates here as we don't have the bandwidth do it. We're working on getting a fiber data connection to our new facility, for now, our testing area only has 6MB of internet bandwidth.

Been looking at pretty much the exact same build myself, only without SSD since load times don't bother me much. That, and I added on the cheap, 24in monitor.

Holy jeebers dude. That explains the Windows Updates for sure. I know from experience that pushing those things to a larger network is a massive bandwidth beast.
