Well, I broke down and bought 2 refurbished 2TB HDs on Ebay for $15 apiece. I had the two empty HDD slots on my Velox so I figured I would stick something in them.

HGST - HUS724020ALS640 - 3.5" 2TB 7.2k SAS HDD - TESTED

I will let you know if they actually worked and I didn't waste $30. :-)

I figure I will stick a bunch of music and stuff that doesn't need high speed access on them.

I should get them in a week so wish me good luck with them. I hope the slots in my Velox are already wired up. I was too lazy to check before I ordered the HDD. :-)

I always have faith in unknown eBay sellers selling stuff for ultra-cheap prices. :-)

I know that you can buy expensive Gucci Bags & Gold Rolex watches on street corners that beat store prices. I am a trusting soul. :-)

I will let folks know how they work. If one of the two is any good I will be happy.

I have all my music on external back up HDD now so the source material should be safe even if the new cheap HDD fails.

Well folks I learned the difference between SATA and SAS today when my 2 refurbished 2TB HDDs arrived. It was a $30 lesson since they cost $15 apiece and they don't fit. :-(

I guess I missed that important fact that it was SAS in the description. It was there but I missed it. The connectors look so close too but not close enough. :-)

They sure are nice looking high quality looking items, but they belong in a server not a desktop computer. I did find out that SATA will work with a SAS controller but not the other way around.

Oh well, maybe that is why they were so cheap. They are nice paper weights and will hold down stacks of paper on my desks till I resell them to some other desktop person that needs a $ lesson. :-)

As long as I had the Velox open I stuck the extra 500 MB SATA from the old Digital Storm beast in it and I am happy enough I guess. I moved all the music & documents off the 1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus and put it on the transferred HDD. So now I have more of the 970 EVO Plus free for stuff that needs to be accessed FAST! :-)

@hoserator,

Apparently, they are designed for server rooms. They appear to be of extremely good quality. This $30 lesson is something I will remember. SAS HDD Server Room stuff - SATA HDD Desktop Stuff. :-)

Next time I will check to verify SATA which I assumed it was.

Sounds like it's time to sell a couple of enterprise quality refurbished HDDs on eBay for about $30 a piece. Hahaha

I am actually going to order from the same ebay guy again one of these days. This time I am going to be sure I order SATA. :-) The SAS & SATA looks exactly alike except for the smallest difference in the pin structure that is hard to tell visually.

For the minute I am satisfied with the 500GB WD HDD I stole from the 12 year old beast. It will be perfect for my music & documents.

I found some Sas to Sata adapters by just searching SAS to SATA adapters so maybe all is not lost.

Awesome

I will look into the SAS to SATA adapters. I wonder how that would fit in the small space that the HDD fits in the Velox.

I went ahead and ordered 2 more 2TB HDDs from the same guy on eBay. I am a glutton for punishment. But this time I made sure they were SATA. :-)

They were listed at $25 apiece or make an offer. I offered $40 for 2 which wasn't accepted but $50 was accepted for the 2 drives.

Western Digital - WD20EZRX - WD Green - 3.5" 2TB SATA HDD - TESTED

Wish me luck this time. :-)

I will check out the SAS to SATA adapters and if that works I might stick those 2 SAS drives in my 12 year old beast. There is room behind the HDD drives for any extra cabling needed.

I don't think the adapter will fit inside the cage with the HDD in it. Disappointed

You could always go old school and just have them openly laying inside the case. LOL

See if they fit in the back. You might have some spare SATA inputs left on the mobo. Hahaha

I got 2 more 2TB Western Digital HDDs on order that should be SATA this time. I will put them in the 2 HDD slots in my Velox case.

I will put the 500MB back in the old beast when those 2 come in for the Velox.

The two SAS 2TBs HDD I will stick in the old beast since there is plenty of HDD slots and open in the back for cabling after I investigate the appropriate SAS to SATA adapters. Plus the old beast came with all the extra power cables and stuff in a box they used to send with the systems which should make the job easy. :-)

I will let you guys know as the saga continues. I think I am on the right track now.
