OK. My new Digital Storm computer arrived safely in Switzerland. Thank You Digital Storm, it works brilliantly! Review and pics follow next week!
But now two questions: 1. Is it recommended to deactivate hibernation mode via the command prompt? I have heard that this would help reduce the impact of windows 7 on the SSD it is installed on... 2. Apparently, without me changing anything related to that, I do not receive UAC prompts in my one and only, default Administration account. There are no other accounts on the computer and this is the account that shipped with the system. Coming from a Mac, I did kinda expect Windows to prompt me... Considering it is default... Did Digital Storm make a change on some registry setting or something? (Alex?) I do not mind, not being asked for installation permission... everything works much faster... I'm just concerned about security... but if you tell me MSE plus windows firewall is good enough for security, I would much rather leave it disabled... Please clarify. Thanks in advance! However, you can tell the computer's running great by me getting concerned over such itty bitty settings, which most probably already work as they should.

Hi Hexagonal,
Glad to hear you got your computer. It didn't seem to take very long to get there. Since my computer is at my home I don't use UAC at all. I do believe that Win-7 has it set up so commands from the keyboard and mouse don't ask for prompts or approval. Win-7 does not have a good history with hibernation or sleep mode. I would not use either one. Frank |

Hey Frank! Thanks for your answer!
Yes, I know, shipping was double as quick as I expected. I almost did not have any time to acquire the peripherals, screen, speakers, etc. But more of that in my review the coming week. For the hibernation/sleep question: Yes I am fully aware I should not and will not be using them (not to mention it nearly blew me off my seat to see my computer take as long to start up, as my old one took to wake up from sleep (reconnecting internet included)). That is why I asked whether it does any harm to completely disable at least the hibernation mode (via elevated command prompt, "powercfg /hibernate off") after disabling hybrid sleep. This deletes the huge hyberfil.sys hidden system file, which hibernation uses to store the ram data when activated (bad for ssd as it writes almost 16GB of data to it every time I activate hibernation (not that I am doing that anyways)). I now did this and am happy. The second one: UAC I have double checked that the control panel has everything displaying as activated. Therefore only three possible scenarios come to mind, in any combination with each other: 1. DS disabled UAC using the command prompt/registry completely. and/or 2. DS disabled UAC for Administrators using the command prompt/registry. and/or 3. The user account that came preinstalled from DS is one of those special admin accounts (that are usually hidden), which are unaffected by UAC completely. Either way, I don't mind. I'm happy. However, I would like Alex to say something to clarify and help me learn something, if possible. Please? By the way, my brother says thank you to Digital Storm for including the requested second T-Shirt! He already thinks about buying a gaming laptop from You in two years!

Does someone know what this is? Thanks in advance.

Hi Hexafonal,
The System Reserved partition is use to store boot information for the system drive. It is also used for BitLocker if you ever use drive encryption. Some people who never plan on using BitLocker remove the System Reserved partition. Removing it is not a simple operation and I would leave it alone. If you want to remove it you can do a search and find the procedure. If you screw it up you will have to disconnect all of your other drives and then reload Win-7 again to your SSD. If you don't do that step the System Reserved Partition will be placed on your HDD. Then when you boot the system will have to read both drives and that slows down your startup. Frank |

Glad to hear that you're enjoying the PC! The UAC is usually disabled by the team as it doesn't really do any good stopping virus/malware from affecting your PC. No need to worry about it. |

Thank You for the answer Frank! You sure know a lot! I know much about fruity operating systems, but am still learning stuff on Windows. I am not going to try removing this partition. I just wanted to know what cause I am donating 10GB of SSD space.
And thanks for your answer, too, Alex! I just wanted confirmation that it was indeed intended by you and not just some weird case, where the UAC did not show up. Good to know it isn't essential for security. Everything works much smoother when not being prompted all the time! (In any case everything works much smoother with this computer anyways!) Thanks again! Review comes in two or three days!

Hi Hexagonal,
The System Reserved Partition should only take 100Mb. Frank |

Sorry for the long time it took for me to reply to this.
Yes, you are right Frank. The System Reserved Partition is only ca. 100MB in size. I was looking in the wrong place.
Also: Computer Excitement + General Other Stuff + Self-Inflicted Computer Troubles + Holidays = I have sadly not yet found the time to write a decent review... At least I can then also put in a section about the DS costumer service, when I've got everything in my system to work again... |
