Greetings Digital Storm Forum!
Prior to my hunt for a "perfect computer" (it may sound like an oxymoron) and finding Digital Storm, I used an HP Pavilion Entertainment dv6000 laptop for two and a half years. I had multiple problems with it, and after doing some research and checking the HP Help and Support Forums, I found that similar models were recalled, and suffered from manufacturing defects. I also discovered that HP has one of the highest failure rates for its components of any laptop manufacturer. Source: http://www.electronista.com/articles/09/11/17/reliability.study.has.apple.4th.place/ I will spare you a detailed history of all the frustrations I experienced with my computer, but needless to say, it inspired me to find a computer company that actually cares about its products. I am thinking about selling my laptop, but I am unsure of its price. I have checked multiple websites that provide free price quotes, but I know that most of them are unreliable. The specs for my old laptop are as follows: OPERATING SYSTEM:WINDOWS 2.6.0.6001 (SP 1) CPU TYPE:AMD TURION(TM) 64 X2 MOBILE TECHNOLOGY TL-52 CPU SPEED (GHZ):1.62 SYSTEM MEMORY (GB):1.998 GRAPHICS CARD MODEL:NVIDIA GEFORCE GO 7200 GRAPHICS CARD DRIVER:NVD3DUM.DLL DESKTOP RESOLUTION:1280X800HARD DISK SIZE (GB):225.828H The computer will not boot correctly; that is to say, it will start up but then shut down and reboot endlessly. I have confirmed that the motherboard is bad, and must be replaced. The built in WLAN network adaptor is also defective. The original battery, AC adaptor, and hard drive are all included, and all work fine. The hard drive has been wiped clean and has nothing on it. The trackpad and buttons work perfectly, and the monitor is in great shape. The memory has been upgraded, from 1GB to 2GB. Overall, the screen itself may be worth some money, but I don't think I can get more than $50 if I sell it for parts. Any input or thoughts would be gratefully appreciated! |

I believe that you have posted in the wrong forum but I'll put my 2c in.
I'm not sure how accurate the stats of the article you posted are in regards to notebook reliability. Most of these mass manufacturers are using the same parts anyhow. There shouldn't be a drastic different in component failure. However most any company that uses over seas tech support 90% of laptop manufactures are going to use lower quality parts and support in order to drive sales. Most people would rather pay less for the same "specs" than to pay for a higher quality product with name brand parts and an educated support staff. I worked for HP retail support and had to set up repairs quite often, this was almost 3 years ago and things may have changed. To the best of my knowledge they have 3 repair categories. Basically ~369$ which will cover ram, video cards, hdds, and a few other components. The next step up was ~700$ and covered MB and screens. The last category was BER or beyond economical repair it would cost more to fix than your computer is worth. In the even that someone were to buy your notebook they would be stuck with a 700$ repair bill, which your notebook is not worth based on its current specs. You could of course try to find the MB from the HP parts store but the parts are very overpriced and there is no guarantee that it would even work. You can get a new notebook with better specs than your current one for less than the cost of repair. I don't think your notebook is worth any more than what you can sell the parts for, sorry. Welcome to DS though I hope you find a new rig that will work for you. |

Thank you Herniter for your well-written and concise response. You are right; I am not interested in trying to repair my laptop, as I know it will be just too expensive to get it up and running. I'm not sure how much the parts would be worth, hence why I was asking in this thread. But you're correct in stating that I should sell it for its separate components.
I apologize if I posted in the wrong forum; should I post in the Technical Support Guides, or in General Discussion? Thank you again for your help. Edited by Diogones - 03 Mar 2010 at 12:48pm |
