Looking for feedback on recommend case and build for the needs below.
Budget: [Under $3500] Usage: [Gaming primarily games such as The Division, World of Warships, War Thunder, and Fallout 4] I play mostly millitary F2P games, MMO's, and RPG. Game at 1440p 144hz monitor gsync. Do not need storage for data as I already have several external USB 3.0 drives for data and video. Looking for what type of drives for OS, games, and video editing needs. Already own a Geforce 980TI so can do without a video card in build to bring the cost down. Not looking to do SLI in the future. Special Needs: [Gaming and also video editing for YouTube] Edited by blackcatfoe - 17 Apr 2016 at 1:00pm |

Hi blackcatfoe,
Here is a build to get you started. Put in 32Gb of memory in case you do a lot of video editing. If it is casual you could drop back to 16Gb. If you do it for business then you might think about moving up to a X99 build. The motherboard is a little more than you need with SLI but is a good board with good features. This build has standard warranty with three year service and one year parts. You will have to decide if one year parts is adequate. Thank you.
Any advantage on getting the Samsung 950 SSD versus the 850 PRO? |

Hi blackcatfoe,
welcome back great system suggested by FrankW ![]() the 950 is much faster than the 850. others will chime in with all sort of technical details which will explain how this is done. I severely lack that knowledge. you have plenty of space in the mobo for it and still sli in the future. |

Hi blackcatfoe,
1. The 950 Pro 512Gb is 2.5 to 4 times faster than the 850 Pro 512Gb. 2. The 850 Pro has 10 year warranty or 300 TBW and the 950 Pro has a 5 year warranty or 400 TBW. 3. The 950 is about $110 more than the 850. 4. They both use V-NAND Technology memory. 5. The 950 is much smaller and uses PCIe 3.0 x4 (up to 32 Gb/s) NVMe 1.1 interface. (M2) 6. The 850 uses SATA 6 Gb/s (compatible with SATA 3 Gb/s and SATA 1.5 Gb/s) interface. If you want the latest and fastest SSD available then the 950 Pro 512Gb is your choice. If you want to save some money and don't care about top speed then the 850 Pro 512Gb is a good choice. I personally choose the 950 for my computer. There is one negative associated with the 950 Pro. The 950 Pro runs warm/hot compared to the 850 Pro. The 950 Pro has built in thermal throttling if it reaches a certain temperature under load. If you have proper air flow in your computer and you don't have your M2 stuck in between GPUs pumping out a bunch of heat, throttling should not be a problem. I have my M2 mounted at the bottom of the motherboard with no GPU over top or below it. I have checked the temp several times and it has never seem to be a problem to me. Now lets talk practical application. A gamer is probably not going to notice a big performance improvement between the 850 and 950 drives playing games. Frank |

So this would be my question. I know the 950 would have little or no difference if used to run games off of but as far as using it for OS as primary drive boot or a second drive when writing and encoding video is it worth it for that function? I plan to add an SSD drive for games only. Thinking 850 EVO is all I need for that.
Thanks for all the feedback. I work in IT but do not get a chance to play with all the new toys since these items do not apply to corporate platforms. Edited by blackcatfoe - 18 Apr 2016 at 1:31pm |

The Samsung 850 Pro is a better choice over the 850 EVO. Better technology, twice the warranty and twice the TBW rating.

Thanks
Would a 950 be recommended for a boot OS and drive for video editing? Or just an 850 PRO? Edited by blackcatfoe - 18 Apr 2016 at 3:32pm |

it's really about what you're comfortable spending for speed. reliability and warranty. the 950 is faster and costs more, so yeah, it's better than the 850 Pro. you'll finish your editing work faster and boot faster. you can then store it on your external storage if you like.

Thanks.
Final questions. Can I install more than one 950 SSD? Or do MB only allow one due to the connection limitation? Do Digital Storm install lower then the Video Card to avoid heat issues? |

your best bet is to look at mobo configurations (especially the one's that DS stocks) to see if they can handle 2x m.2 pcie drives. the other route you can go is with pcie slot Intel 750 nvme drives at x4 speed. with a single vid card you can config 2 of those and it would look like: x8/x4/x4 (vid card+ssd+ssd). some boards disable the second m.2 slot if you occupy the third pcie slot. you just have to read up on them or tell DS what config you want and leave it to them to pick the mobo that best suits that config. lots of configs with Z170, nice to have options but can be confusing. gl
