So, I am considering this build. It will be a dual purpose system. Work (I am a developer, and will have from 3-6 VM's open at any one time, hence 32GB Mem) and play, Crysis, Skyrim and the like, plus a few MMO's, EQ2, SWTOR and hopefulle TSO Online when it hits.

Looking for something to last me a few years, 3 or so, without being totally outdated by then.

So....what ya all think, what would you change.

Total cost of system: 3,554.00 + Shipping

That does look good. Although if you stick with stage 2 h2O i heard that it will be louder than stage 1 h2O since the Slade is suppose to be a noise reduction tower and the guidelines recommend that you use the Stage 1 Vortex 120mm

I honestly couldn't tell you. I think the people who are most familiar with the vortex cooling would have to tell you that.

Hi wwoods.... ArkansasWoman777 steered you to a better case over the 300r.   Your build looks great, and alot quieter than your original with those noisy Zalman fans.

One thing to consider.... The 550D is quiet because of the top and side acoustic, sound deadening, panels being on.    With the Vortex 240 the top panel stays off because the rad mounts up top.   The quiet goes away.   The option is either go with Vortex 120 that mounts against the inside back wall allowing top panel to stay on or go with the newer Corsair H100i with its better fans and Corsair Link software that allows the fans to be adjusted for speed and noise.

Or, go with the the 500r or HafX case under Special Ops. The 500r has a side panel 200mm fan to feed fresh air to the video card and mobo.   The HafX is the best air cooled case and quiet with large slow moving fans that push lots of air.

The gtx 670 is within 5-10% of the performance of the 680 for alot less money. Just another way to get the most for your money.

Change to Window 7 Pro to use over 16gb ram.

Hope this helps and good luck.

For cooling, in general, the Vortex 120 is for stage 1 oc and the Vortex 240 or Corsair H100i for stage 2 oc.

If you go with the 500r or even better the Dreadnought HafX case, you can use the Noctua D14 air cooler. Its very reliable and quiet.

Lots of ways to go.

You could go to Dreadnought level 3 and make your drive selections. Add the Noctua D14 cooler and gtx 670 and that would be my pick.   I can't do alot right now with configs and cut/paste.

See what you think. I have to take off for now.    See ya tomorrow.

Also I assume that vid card will push 2 monitors easy enough

Awesome

Hello wwoods. Like your build...

ArkansasWoman and bprat steered ya in the right direction, and DS will build you a rock solid rig.     X79 and the 3930K are a great combination...I'm using them now.

I do have one caution for you regarding your RAID SSD selection.

As I have posted several times now, Intel has not yet seen fit to update the X79 chipset motherboard family to allow the TRIM software function to work with RAID.   Despite promises, Intel may never do so this late in the game, and if DS didn't already warn you about this, DS sales reps should probably be speaking up about the TRIM issue when customers order RAID on the X79 boards to make sure they are aware.     Without TRIM
taking out the trash, once you have written to all the memory blocks once, your fast SSD RAID array would slow down.

I discovered this fact about no Intel TRIM in RAID on X79 while my build was being assembled, confirmed it as accurate with DS, and dropped SSD RAID on my X79 /3930K Hailstorm build in Oct '12 as a result.    Still plenty fast on a single SSD Drive 1.

Alex....? Perhaps it's time to put a caution for DS customers on the RAID selection choices about that Intel TRIM issue with X79 chipset...

That build looks great. It'll be quiet but powerful.

You could go with stage 1 overclocking.   It is an inexpensive boost in performance.

Good luck.

I thought about that, but this will also be a work system, running multiple VM's at once (anywhere from 3-6) and stability is a big deal. Would that be stable ?

I am planning on raiding the two Westerd Digitals and booting off the SSD. I would have assumed that my raid selection would have applied to the WD's ?

Overclocking is usually very stable.  On occasion and not common, after one takes delivery, they might have boot problems, but a quick call to DS to tweek the voltage is all it needs. DS does test for stability but every location is different.   After that, all is good.

I've had mine oc'd to stage 1 for 18 months at 4.4 Ghz and vcore at 1.4 , using it many hours every day with zero problems.

Yea, I did not mean to imply they dont test, I am sure they do a great job, call it paranoia....work system and all. I donno, I may, will think on it.

No problems.  Big%20Smile   All legitimate concerns that most of us had at one point.   Paranoia can be a good thing. Hahaha

The oc profile is saved in Bios as a seperate profile, so one can always load default profile and get rid of oc.

Ya gotta do whatever makes you comfortable.

Yea..I am still debating it. But, I am a little more comfortable knowing the OC profile is seperate and I can load the default whenever.

One more thing, the vid card I chose, should be able to push dual monitors quite easilly ?

The gtx 680 can drive two monitors with no problem.  If you game across two monitors, which I don't believe you do, then with some demanding games the settings would have to be dropped a bit because of the added rendering needed.

Here's a link to see what it can do.

Not sure what you need for the VMs, but should be very good.

Here's a link to see what it can do.

Not sure what you need for the VMs, but should be very good.

Yea, I dont game across 2 monitors.. The dual monitors are used when I work, vm's on one monitor and editing on other....

Not sure how demanding your virtualizations are, 3D or not, but with the Sabertooth mobo you do have the ability to add another video card for sli if needed.  I would want a little bigger psu for sli, but that's just an option you might or might not care about.

not 3d, mostly CLI on linux systems in VM's (vmware) running on win7, maby one or two with a real simple GUI, but nothing 3d.

I may opt for the bigger power supply, maby 1k, that way if I ever do go SLI I am set in that respect.

Your build shows your 180 GB Intel 520 SSD as boot drive 1, and you selected RAID 1 for drive set 1, so you will want to change that to no raid for set 1.    TRIM is needed for RAID with SSD's...and it's not there for the X79 chipset to use.

You will be fine using RAID with normal HD's on the X79 mobo.
You will have to ask DS Sales if they will RAID 1 the matching WD's you selected for your drive 2 and drive 3.    Don't see why they wouldn't.

I would agree about going with the 1050w PSU as you were considering, to better guard your easy upgrade path to 2 x SLI 680's.    Never hurts to exceed your max power requirements, as all PSU power levels will degrade over time.

I would definitely suggest you go LEVEL 1 overclock on the 3930K CPU ...A very inexpensive CPU boost that your cooler, K class processor and board are all designed for, adding to overall performance for very little cash.

I doesn't save much but, not sure you need the USB card.   The case has 2 front usb 3 and the mobo on the rear i/o panel has another 4 usb 3 and 6 usb 2.0. Depends what you need, though.

The rest looks great.

Ahh, excellent, dident know had that many onboard, I will drop the extra USB card, plus that will drop the power consumption, even by a little bit.

Thanks again everyone for the advice, this is gonna replace my 4 year old system been struggling with.

Will be sure to post a review/pics when comes in, I will probably be ordering early next week. Gonna be a long 2 week wait for delivery....

Have you looked at the Dell Ultra series for monitor? I'd recommend U2412M instead of the Acer. Or you can always go to the 27'' version if needed be.

Don't forget the free game download!

Just a thought to consider here before you decide this nice build.

For only $300 difference you could be going with a 2 X SLI 670 2 GB setup now...? or $375 more for 2 x SLI 670 4 Gb now....?

Either SLI 670 setup would absolutely smoke the single 680 and would be very very close in performance to 2 x SLI 680's.     Perhaps you could delay the monitor & keyboard in order to pay for the higher SLI performance now...?

Look at # 783190 using 2 x SLI GTX 670 4 GB cards...

Really, would a SLI 670 be that much better than a single 680 ? ...Drooling .. might have to look into that. And yea...must get the game also.

How would SLI effect my heat in that rig ya think ? Other thing I was thinking, a 680 would be more "future proof"...ya think a SLI 670 would be more future prrof ?

A sli, gtx 670 is almost double the performance of a single 680.  No contest.

Here's a link to compare the two cards in single setup.

As far as heat, most not all of the heat is exhausted out the back ports of the card and out of the case.  You still want decent airflow to the cards fans though.

The 550D case will probably work if you game in air conditioning where the air pulled into the case is cool.  The 550D is a great case but does trade cooling for quiet.    For sli, I'd go to one of the cases i mentioned before but that's me.  Big%20Smile
