New to this site, down to a couple of boutique PC gaming builders, need some advice and feedback.
I am curious if all firmware/BIOS will be current also during the build? Also how do you save your builds on the site? It disappears after an hour or so. Annoying. At the top of the build page there is an option to save and email. The email will have a direct link and you can also click on the load configuration at the top of any page and put the build # in after you have saved the configuration.

What is the native res of your monitor and what kinds of games do you play?
right off the bat I can tell you to change your ram to 1600MHz, drop the fan upgrade, change your cpu cooler to noctua, forget the fan controller, it won't control all your fans, and the temps are not accurate. there are probably other changes but the things mentioned were done so because they did not better your perfomrance and in some cases actually hindered in some way. Other changes will be recommended when we know what the use of the pc is for, aka games/work/etc and for gaming we need to know the res of the monitor and types of games. |

thanks for the replies guys. curious to the 1600mhz ram instead and cpu cooler upgrade? do it block more airflow or way overkill? i will admit the fan controller looks cool, but i know the temps will fluctuate a lot since the sensors aren't that great. for my monitor it's a dell ultrasharp 24" iirc 1920 x1080, mainly play BF3 on it. TIA for the advice - i've jut begun my research last week, almost pulled the trigger on an overpriced alienware ALX at $3,500 even with my employee discount. |

That's a nice build, but I second DST's suggestions. The Noctua D14 is quiet, reliable and cools great. It might be huge but it doesn't block airflow, and its fans might even help with case airflow.
For BF3 and your monitor, a gtx 670 will give you the same gaming, within a few fps as the 680 for alot less. If you max out games and want 60fps+ at all times you can add another 670 in sli. Depends on your needs. Here's alink to check out comparing cards. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/555?vs=598 With DS, you'll definitely get more for your money and great support and all quality parts with manufactureres warranty once DS 's is up. |

thanks for the feedback and link - i picked the 680 mainly because i was thinking of a couple of years later down the road so i don't need to upgrade so quickly. not sure if my reasoning is good or not. will the large noctua block my ram slots? i never had water cooling before and i thought it was a neat upgrade. i currently have an old dell xps 720 on life support (radeon 6950 and quad core 6600) with the large XPS OEM cooler too. The Vortex 240 isn't true water cooling in the sense of a seperate resevoir, pump, and etc. It's a sealed unit, maintenance free but can be noisy. The fans can be adjusted to lower rpm with resistor pac, etc but will be noisier than Noctua. They are popular though, so your choice of course.
The Noctua's fins do overhang the first ram slot for most mobo, but with 16GB ram, wouldn't be used. The fan overhangs another 1 or 2 ram sticks, but just unclips for easy access. Ram can be used in all slots, just have to use standard ram sticks and not the tall heat spreader types.

The Vortex 240mm is not a bad cooler at all. Yes, the Noctua is just as great. But, is it really worth the massive size and look inside the PC? Everything has it's advantages and disadvantages, it's up to the customer to see what they would generally prefer. Both are not bad choices at all.

i think i might go with one of the hydro solutions, the noctua is awesome - but it is massive and blocks the ram, therefore limiting my choices.

That's one of the main reasons why we use the zero maintenance liquid coolers.

Nope, obviously your new parts won't be covered (except by the manufacturer's warranty), but the original DS stuff is still covered.

The 3 year warranty is one year parts and 3 year labor/tech.
For gpus no matter what you pick in around 3 years you gonna have to upgrade. Best bang for the buck right now is 670 for your res and as bp said sli 670 if you want to play bf3 with all bells and etc. for gaming 8GB of ram is more then enough, if you are worried get 16GB of ram, I don't think you will ever need it, with that you don't need to mess with ram/noctua, and if you know whats good for you, you would go with noctua, it has a great track record for reliability/perfomrance. You won't be upgrading things like processor on this pc, the new processors will not fit current motherboard, the only way to do that is basically new mobo/cpu which also means new ram. thing to upgrade easily in this pc would be hdd/ssd/gpus. |

wow- so i call your sales dept, what an arrogant and impatient rep, i was ready to place the order worth $3k, but i just had a simple question on how many fans are in the 942 and he kept putting me on hold. he really sounded annoyed and i just gave up...

I can't justify going to an lc system that gives me air cooled performance
Plus the noctua for the most part if it breaks down its a fan and that takes seconds to fix.
these closed loops can have fans go wrong, pump fail, leak, and most of those will requier changing the whole cooler. Perhaps thats why us old timers so no reason to go from a perfectly proven reliable air cooler to these closed looped LC systems with more possible headaches and same perfomrance and more noise. ![]() Edited by DST4ME - 26 Mar 2013 at 3:03pm |

Thats not normal, you should let us look over your build anyways. the 942 comes with 230mm red front led, 2 x 200mm non led (side/top) and it has room for optional 200mm on top, plus I believe a rear 140mm fan. Edited by DST4ME - 26 Mar 2013 at 3:05pm |

thanks - you're good as usual he told me that no fans come with the 942, but when i asked him to confirm that because i didn't believe him that's when he became bitchy to me.
i guess i just don't have time for people with sh*tty attitudes when i am about to lay down some of my hard earned money - i could always just get a ho desktop from wal-mart

Don't let that one bad experience get you turned off from DS. Maybe they are busy and somebody that should not be answering the phone answered.
Did you happen to catch the name of this person? report them to management: [email protected] btw here is all the info on haf x: haf x (942) |

I agree 100% with DST..... don't let a bad phone conversation turn you off from getting an awesome rig with great support. What you heard is not the DS we know. Maybe a meeting or out of office committment put someone on the phone filling in. Not an exceptable excuse but things happen.
If you have any questions, ask us on the forums. |

Sorry to hear about that. That does not sound like a normal experience, I'm not sure what happened, but, mistakes can occur, perhaps the team was unable to switch back. We would love to have you be a customer. Feel free to send me an email: [email protected] and I'll be more than happy to answer any questions and take care of you. I'll let Management know about your situation as well nevertheless.

Chat window usually pops up during their West Coast hours when you go to config and linger a bit, deciding on selections.

Hey guys - I noticed some of cables in the videos are "sleeved" in different colors, I didn't see that as a choice for the Dreadnaught, any way to get that option?
Also instead of 4x4GB, can I get 2 x 8gb instead? Here is my 99% final build, thoughts? I know some don't like the closed loop cooler from Corsair, I do like the noctua, but not the large size and it limits my future RAM upgrades with heat spreaders etc. The H100i does have large dia tubing. You can request whatever parts and etc you want from DS, what part of my system do you see in the DS config? my system is all custom.
As for ram upgrade: a. unless you are doing heavy duty media editing you are not gonna need more then 8GB. b. worst case scenario, you unscrew the heatsink off ( 2 screws, 2 minutes) and put the ram in and put the heatsink back ( 2 screws, 2 minutes). ![]() Edited by DST4ME - 26 Mar 2013 at 9:12pm |

We usually include the wire sleeve for the Aventum, but, if you would like them, it's $99 to get them for your PC. Make sure you include the request in the special notes.

The chat window opens up after 60 seconds on the site if I am marked as available. I generally work the following hours. Noon to 5 pm eastern and 6pm to 8pm eastern time. This generally corresponds to the work hours for Digital Storm except for an hour break for dinner. |

Models don't matter what hardware is inside is what counts.
that lats build you have with nocuta IMHO would be the best choice, and if you change gpu to single/sli 670 the build would be perfect and hold up to any other model, if not beat them. |
