Budget:
Pretty flexible. Expectations: Top performing machine with high stability and good longevity. This is to replace a 8-year-old machine that started out high-end and had a few upgrades over the years, and partially replace a newer laptop which was becoming uncomfortably better for many games than the desktop (while still being well behind modern desktops). Usage: Gaming, video work, maybe VR in the future? Special Needs: I've debated the secondary storage subsystem quite a bit, between a 2TB Samsung 970 EVO, 4TB Samsung 860, and the current 4TB HDD. Having the extra speed really seems like it would be nice in dealing with large intermediate video files, and I'd like it to be somewhere other than my OS drive. I also would like the newer EVO Plus as the OS drive for max responsiveness, and it seems like only the 1TB model is available at DS vs the 2TB model. (To a lesser extent, it would be nice to not have to debate as much which parts of my Steam library to keep on SSD vs HDD.) I could also imagine bumping up the RAM to 64GB to allow for more caching, if that makes better sense. That is a very powerful build you have there. Not to quibble, but I don't see the need for the 1200W power supply. The 850W is a fairly new part, and has plenty of headroom for your build. (Probably 300-400W)
More RAM will not do much of anything for you, but the 32GB makes sense at today's prices in this rig. Storage is one of the easiest upgrades you can add yourself, and clearly gets much cheaper when you DIY. It also gets much cheaper per GB when you put off adding until you need it. Drives get faster and cheaper constantly. I would get what you need now, and add more later, if that's not too daunting for you. Check out some online prices and you'll see what I mean. IMO, you don't want your primary drive to be so large and multi-purpose it's hard to manage. The 1TB NVMe is as high as I'd go. BTW, you can add another NVMe card to that motherboard. When you wish. Hope it helps! |

Fair point. I did have a suspicion that the PSU might be overkill, so I can easily back off on that. Sounds like the rest looks fairly reasonable. Thanks, and let me know if there's any other feedback!

This will be a fast rig.
On your secondary storage, you will be able to easily pop in an additional fast Samsung M.2 NVME SSD in a larger 2 TB size you could use for things like your game files....About half the size of a pocket comb and no cables...it just plugs in on the motherboard and uses one screw to secure down. Watch prices and grab a good deal. Easy max speed storage upgrade. |

Thanks! As you can see by the shiny badge, I've pulled the trigger and now get to progress to playing the waiting game. :) (Pretty sure it'll be worth it.)

Congrats on the Verified Customer badge! I have ordered 4 DS rigs since 2011...including a 2019 Lumos my son uses. All of them continue to serve 24/7 and never fail to impress. That’s why most of us are still here on the forum. DS makes very high quality rigs.
Now for the hard part...the wait...Cheers! |
