Budget:
Around $3,500, which is exactly what this config costs with the current sale going on.

Expectations:
I'm largely looking for a computer that will stave off the need to upgrade for a while. This is going to be my college graduation gift and I'm coming from a macbook pro as my main computer (I know right?). I was going to go with a new macbook pro retina for my grad gift, but I did some searching and saw that I could build a pretty amazing PC for the same price, and gaming is a big priority for me so it was kind of a no-brainer.
I know the GTX 690 is probably overkill to an extent, but, again, I'm looking for something that will perform at a high level without the need for an upgrade for a while (and when I configured the computer with that card in mind, the price matched what the macbook would have cost so why not right?).

Usage:
I'll be using this for everything from web surfing and video streaming to gaming and experimental design and data analysis for my senior year and for the duration of grad school (and hopefully into my career). As far as gaming is concerned, I obviously have the 1080p monitor in my config so I'm looking at a single monitor at 1080p, but that's just for now. I'm considering upgrading that to a higher resolution monitor in the future since I'm pretty sure my build could easily support that.

Hi davissc9...   Welcome to the forums.

You put together a real nice rig but I would suggest a couple of changes.  The gtx 690 is the fastest card out there and very expensive.  I would suggest a sli, 2x  gtx 680.  Being an old service rep I always look at what can go wrong and if the 690 dies and not covered by warranty, which can happen with power spike, software issues, etc,  you're out $1000.  If a single 680 dies you're out  $500 and you still have a 680 to fall back on.   Just me .

Not sure what demands your experimental design and data analysis places on the cpu and ram, but if it can use a 6 core chip and a quad channel ram motherboard, then this alternate config might help.  Its over budget but the quad channel ram has a much higher memory bandwidth over the Z77's dual channel ram.

Config # 768132    Cost $ 3686 ,  not sure if that includes the Holiday sale discount.

If your school work can't utilize the 6 core chip and quad channel ram then your build is right on.  I like the air coolers better, like the Noctua D14 or Hyper 212 for dependability and quieter but the Vortex units do have a very good record so your call as always.

Just another way to go and Good Luck. Big%20Smile
