    Posted: 20 Nov 2011 at 11:51pm

Hi all - Thanks in advance for your advice. As yet another user tired of vanilla Dell builds and slow computers, I'm optimistic about Digital Storm! To the details...

Usage:

50% application/web coding using Visual Studio 2010, SQL Server 2008 R2, Expression Blend

30% HD video/photo editing using Power Director or Adobe Premier/GIMP or Photoshop (am fairly new to this...open to suggestions...)

20% gaming for mainly Diablo 3 and might as well do Skyrim and The Witcher as time allows...and maybe Daikatana at max settings. ;-) Would love to game more but...

Budget: $3,000 give or take for both PC and new monitor.

* Monitor: I have a Dell Ultrasharp 2005 21.5 1680x1050 IPS and a Acer 23 1920x1080 TN?. Interested in larger size and higher resolution along with 90 degree pivot (love this about Dell 21.5) for editing portrait photos and viewing long code/requirements documents. (Though perhaps 27 will be sufficient in landscape?)

Given requirements, I'm targeting new Samsung S27A850D PLS ($900) given out of box 90 degree pivot and 2560x1440 (prefer 16:10 but am sure 16:9 will be fine). Lack of HDMI is a non-issue as I have a large HDTV for consoles/movies. Not overly concerned about backlight bleed given usage. I expect to also use the Acer 1080 at same time as a viewing montor while video editing. Gaming would probably be only on Samsung, unless others are better for some reason.

* PC: Fast! Open to ideas but interested in SSD + storage drive to minimize application load times and to read/write to separate drives during HD video rendering. I'd prefer as quiet of operation as possible, but...fast, quiet, cheap...pick 2.

Given requirements and remaining budget of $2100, I'm targeting the ODE2 or ODE3 build. ODE3 is slightly over budget, but I can see benefit of 570 SLI given my resolution and video requirements. Also, would my usage benefit from an extra 8gb of RAM (for a total of 16gb)?

Thanks again!

Other notes: PC will be in the basement which remains farily cool even on hot days. Have 2 500gb usb 2.0 drives for data backup. Have keyboard/mouse.

Personally I like IPS better then PLS, and I would also rather get the u30 for $1100 then the samsung for $900.

if you gonna be gaming at 2560x1440, for certain games and high settings you will want sli 570.

there is no point in going with ode 2 cause its not really better then ode 1 in gaming department.

for your use I assume you need more then 8GB of ram.

now for your use will having a 6 core be beneficial or not, cause if it is then we need to go with the x79 platform that just came out, if it does not make much of a difference then we go with p67.

ode's cooling is kinda loud depending on which you go with.

personally I like to put you in something like this:

Ticket Number: 620414 but its at your main budget's max and no monitor.

Ah, I see where you're going and it makes sense. I'm fairly positive the extra cores on the x79 platform will help with the video editing in particular, but the p67/z68 is probably a better value?

What do you think of this build? Ticket: 620897

I'm not sure about the difference b/w p67 and z68 mobos...also, by u30, I assume you are referring to the Dell 30"?

Thanks again!

u30 = dell u30 30" yes.

Ya your build looks good but you need to go with stage 2 oc as everything you do will benefit from a faster cpu speeds.

with that case Ask DS specifically for this fan to be added to the top, so you endup with 4 x 200mm fans:

haf 200mm non led fan

Ask for vcore lower then 1.4 for your stage 2 oc.

Thanks, I missed the stage 2 oc from your original build. Last 2 questions I hope:

1. Do you have a preference between ASUS P8Z68-V PRO (Intel Z68 Chipset) or ASUS Sabertooth P67 (Intel P67 Chipset)?

2. Do you see a +$50 benefit of picking 2.5gb on 570 vs 1.2gb?

1. z68 pro, in p67 I like deluxe, but for sli.

2. not really but if you like the 2.5GB go for it, I didn't think we would need more then 1GB of vram now 3 years ago and come to find out some games do need more, so you never know, for the next 2 years I'm pretty sure you are good with the regular version, after that I'm mot sure.
