I was curious as to the process you guys use when a painted system is put together. Do you build the whole thing, then paint it with all the components still inside or do you paint it then assemble it?
Do you folks paint it "in house" or contract it out? |

only reason I asked was because when I spoke with them, they said that the only thing they were waiting on was the paint now... lt led me to believe that they put it together, then dissasemble it, paint it, then put it back together... which did sound like a lot of extra work.

Nah, they can put it all together and have the shell waiting for the case.
Think of it as the frame of a car, waiting for the body to be lowered on to it.

Exactly. For the cases, we take apart the panels (rivets, etc) and they are off to paint. When they are ready, they are re-applied onto the chassis. This allows us to actually build, test, and iron out issues in advance.

I assume we're talking about a TJ9 here. Based on this picture: Looks like, you can paint the front and sides any time. Those pieces just get in the way anyway. The top and bottem look necessary to hold the thing together. Alex, when you take off the top and bottem, is there anything left standing (besides EdH63....)?
On the otherhand, you could probably build the whole thing on the slide out motherboard tray and slip it into the painted case for final assembly and test. Edited by Bill the Cat - 04 Oct 2007 at 10:52pm |

Yes, but, don't forget, we also use torture racks to test the hardware before we even get into the wiring aspect. By the time we finish the torture racks and it's time to put the stuff in the chassis, the computer system's paint job is complete.
