The X79s came out today, and this is the config I came up with 617031
My long winded requirements post is in the hardware section under "Build Theory"...got alot of great feedback, and wanted to know what you guys think of my first crack at the actual build. Thanks to DST4ME for a lot of great advice...

Well few problems/questions.
why 16GB for gaming are not gonna need that much ram. if you want hailstorm, then you should go full lc, otherwise the hailstrom does not have the airflow needed for good temps and dual/tri sli. stage 3 oc has a high vcore go with stage 2 oc and ask for vcore below 1.4. keep in mind for tri monitor setup, you gonna want cf 6970 instead. I would go with the classified evga mobo. Edited by DST4ME - 15 Nov 2011 at 12:34am |

Thanks for the quick response.
- If I drop to 8 GB, should I get a faster frequency, or does it not really matter?
- I REALLY like the Obsidian case...good to know about the airflow. I tried to apply what you told me about LC the GPUs...(dont bother)...I'll relook the Stage 6. Any advantage to the Stage 5 or just go the Full Monty? Should I add some fans too?
- Great advice on the OC...I will drop it to 2...definitely don't want to fry it after a year...special thanks for the vcore advice.
- You definitely talked me out of the GTX 590s...and I thought it was being more "reasonable" by going with 2x instead of 3x 580s...I am having a hard time letting go of the NVIDIA completely though...(totoally irrational...I have just only had NVIDIA stuff...I guess it is one of those "Ford vs Chevy" things...I will relook that too...can't promise anything though.
I really do appreciate the advice (even if I dont always take it!)
Anything else I missed?

One more question:
Anyone have any thoughts on going from the X to the K version of the chip? How big of difference is it?

X is unlocked adn K has locked multipliers.
go with with evga classified mobo instead. I forgot to mention that you got the wrong psu, you want the corsair psu here the 1200w. the difference between stage 6 and 4/5 is that stage has the gpus under lc, with tri sli/cf you gonna want the stage 6 that lcs tri sli/cf. if you want to stick with nvidia, double check and see how you setup 3 monitors, I think its changed from before and I have not looked into it yet. if you don't lc the gpu, don't get the hailstorm, you are not gonna want the hailstorm with gpus on air, so options are stage 6 tri sli/cf or no hailstorm. lets see what you want to do about cooling and then I can help you from there. |

DST,
- I might be blind, but I only see "Asus": boards when I scroll through them...I am not seeing any EVGA (I clicked on the more info for each and still didnt see it; but my network here is blocking some info from loading, so it may just be I can't see the info...)...do you have a model in mind, I might be able to find it that way...
- I will do some more research on how Nvidia's "Surround Vision" works...good advice...
I am looking at the Stage 6 with the GPUs and CPUs. If I go with the K vs the X is it still needed? (other than just looking awesome...) I worked two configs 617549 (X) and 617658 (K)--these do NOT include your advice about the Power Supply, I will have to go back and fix that, but if you want to take a look at those and tell me if I am on the right track, I'd apprecicate it.

I might add that DST4ME turned me on to the Intel SSD and the 320 series are the best...I would change that as well.
Unless you are going to tinker with trying to achieve huge over clocks go with the k series like I did. We have to remember these are only the first two cores available at launch so that is why I went with k instead of x. My thoughts are give it time and then upgrade the cpu. Also if you can manage I would just do 1 or 2 gtx 580's for right now. The 600 series will be out before we know it and then you will want them. I am no where near as informed or as good at this as DST4ME so these are just my opinions. Ohh also go with the cheapest RAM right now unless you want to order the new 4 channel RAM from newegg and let Digital Storm install it for you. No reason to spend extra on upgraded 2 channel now that it is outdated IMHO. Good luck with whate er choices you go with :) |

Also does the 1.4 vcore still apply to the new cpu's or can they handle more than the 2000 series safely?

@BeerHunter, the classified is not listed you have to request it.
x79 classified 3960x has more cache, this will make it a little bit more powerful then the k, if you want the king you want the x. @Dynamus, for the x79 there is not gonna be a cpu to upgrade to, its gonna be kinda like the x58, the 920 and 980x and 990. the 920 was the lowest cpu for the x58, the 980x was like the 3960x, now about a year later came out the 990x to replace the 980x. I have the 980x there would be no reason for me to upgrade to 990x cause the difference is very little, so if you had gotten a 920 then later upgraded to the 990x, you ended up spending more money then me and got pretty much the same performance, in short going with the 3960k now to upgrade cpu later dont' make much sense since the next cpu (lets call it 4000x) is gonna have around the same performance as 3960x. the 1.4 vcore applies to all cpus as of right now. |

Thanks gents.
- will definitely make the chage to the PSU and now the 320 SSD...thanks for the tip on that Dynamus.
DST- thanks for the link, I will check it out.
- I think I am going to go with the K...not sure if the 500 bones is really worth it to me just to say I have "the king"...from what everyone has said, it won't make that much of difference...at least at my current skill level with o/c (which is "none--but willing to learn") plus that 500 bucks can take some of the sting out of that Stage 6. Ouch!
- Starting to get pumped about this build...thanks for the continued help guys...MTF

Well the cache non of us know really how much difference it makes, so be careful tho in the past it has not made too much of a difference, it could be different now, the extra cache is the only reason I would recommend the 3960x assuming that made a good difference otherwise the unlocked multi and etc are not important.

True, we don't know what we don't know...hazard of being an "early adopter" I guess. I probably wont make the order for a week or two...maybe that will be enough time for some guys to come up with some hard numbers...hopefully, history will hold!
Thanks again for yours and everyone else's help.
