ey, I've got a bud who's been looking around for a new gaming rig. he's one of the guys who originally used Dell like everyone else and was convinced that he was getting his money's worth from em, and I changed him from that. so, anyways, he's looking for a nice gaming rig below $1800, since his max budget with all peripherals is $2.2k, and he's got $400 worth of stuff to nab on amazon. also, he needs some sort of wifi, so I opted for a wireless-g external stick on the configurator. most isp's don't usually even get close to that 54mb max, anyways, right?
here's what I've got so far. config no. 431511 price $1774 Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - HAF 922 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 930 2.8GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: EVGA X58 LE Edition SLI (Intel X58 Chipset) System Memory: 6GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 750W Digital Storm Certified (Dual SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition Recommended) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (80GB Solid State (By: Intel) (Model: X25-M MLC Edition) (Extreme Performance) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: Wireless USB-G 54Mbps (Supports 802.11g/b) Video Card: 1x ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 1: Noctua Dual 120mm Fans High Performance Cooler (Compatible With ONLY i7 Processors) H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Red) Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks Boost Processor: FREE: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz (Cooling Upgrade Recommended) Boost Video Card: FREE: Yes, Overclock the video card(s) as much as possible with complete stability Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: FREE: Digital Storm T-Shirt - Black (Large) Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty 80gb solid state b/c the 40gb seems to have a somewhat nerfed speed, and the 5770...well, getting anything good and modern right now seems sorta tough in his budget. so eventually, we decided that for now, he'd grab a 5770. later down the line, he'd pull a houdini sort of thing with his folks, sell the 5770, and nab something better. maybe a 6 series card, idk. you know parents, they don't know that much about computers and you can just sorta convince them into things. lol. |

The 40GB Intel SSD speeds are fine, only their sequential speeds are lower than the bigger Intel drives, their small file performance is the same.
Drop to the 40GB and put a decent GPU in there. |

if it were me and it was a rig soley for gaming or even mostly for gaming i wouldnt consider anything else until i had at least a 470 in that budget range, even a nerfed ssd is way faster than a standard HDD (assuming this is true at all, i dont know why it would be)
but i know i dont have to tell you video power is THE gaming bottleneck, i dont care if hes playing at 800x600, video power first.. if you HAVE to have an ssd, though im not sure why, id get this:
if it were my gaming only computer for that budget, i would so drop the SSD for a 480.. this would only put you up to $1730, and you can always just install an SSD later, which i personally think is far better than your idea becuase it doesnt involve trying to sell or replacing anything Edited by !ender_ - 12 Aug 2010 at 3:42pm |
