Hi, i am looking to upgrade in technology. By that i mean i want to build my own PC that can handle games like, Hellgate: London, BioShock, and possibly Crysis. So i want some bang for my buck. A lot of power, but at a reasonable price. maybe 700-1000 bucks? I can only buy it next year, because im REALLLY broke :(, so i got some time. But any suggestions on what to get? My current specs
Sony Vaio intel pentium 4 CPU 1.8ghz ATI Radeon 9550 Graphics card 1gb RAM and 60gb HDD Like i said, drops some names, brands, prices. I'm a newb to this stuff. Thanks in advanced! Edited by dinomarcel - 09 Mar 2008 at 12:07am |

If it's going to be a year before you can get a computer I would wait and get advice then.
New hardware comes out constantly, so any advice given now will be obsolete next year.
Not to mention prices drop all the time too. |

Why are you coming here for info. if your going to build it yourself? I was going to build my own computer at first till I stumbled on this web site. This web site was the first to have almost every components that I was going to use for my build and for a very good price.
While building your own computer is not hard it can be a nightmare if you have one or more defective components and you are trying to troubleshoot.
It has been awhile since my previous build and I did not have the ability to put each possible defective component in a working system to test.
So I decided to go with Digital Storm they stock top of the line component and the price is hard to beat.

This is not a parts boutique, so why would you think DS would spend their time creating a build for you right here for you to simply cut them out of the build itself?
While anyone here can appreciate your willingness to spend less and take on a challenge like building your own rig, I can't imagine any retail store drawing you a blueprint and not at least charging you for their time. I also wouldn't expect DS to wait for anyone to "get a large sum of money unexpectedly, because it could happen". Retail stores aren't in the business to wait for people to get their finances ready before they open their doors or they wouldn't open their doors as often as they need to. Being a discerning and intelligent person, I would imagine you've already thought this through yourself and come to some conclusions on your own about certain expectations of a company that offers what DS offers here. I think that when you do come into some money, come back here and let some people speak into your needs and find out how fun and exciting it will be to have a quality build boutique master you together a solid system that you can proudly boast about. |

Cool, i totally get your point 110%. i just want to have some sort of newbies guide. I dont even know if this is the correct term, but, 32bit OS as opposed to the other one? What should i buy, an intel core 2 duo 3.0ghz or a Quad 2.4ghz. That kind of stuff. I just need some tips on what to expect if someone asks me what i want in a rig. Im not asking that Digital Storm waits for me for a large some of money, im not stupid i know that doesnt happen. Im saying IF something finally goes right and i have the funds FOR a beastly rig, then i want to know what i can buy for a reasonable price. Ya know? I mean, heck, you saw what im running on now. Its a piece!

I hope you realize that in a years time, we going to have native quad/octo cpus, duo gpus, standard ddr3, etc... so planning a build now is sort of pointless.

I gotcha, and I don't mean to come across snobbish. I look at DS and their operations and product line much like I view the business I'm in and the product I sell. We're not the cheapest in town, but we're the best.
What I sell many others sell like products, but no one services their products like we do on a national platform. I can sell my product everyday because of the lack of relationship that my competitor chooses to have with their customer. I know if I first sell who I am to a potential client, then sell my company's interest in having a long term relationship with them, I can sell my product with very little effort. It doesn't become about the product, rather the commitment to partnering with them. I know DS well enough to know that they would rather partner with you and help you in your build. Capitalism is an awesome method of a company's way to connect with the customer. I believe there are greater rewards at the end of the day than just a mechanical and methodical transaction that took place. And hey, if nothing else, William the Feline or bfrank2me might come in here and wow you with some lofty thoughts! (inside joke) |

Yeah i totally get that. I was looking at the site, and its a real
solid community. I'd rather build it through here than get my parts and
build it my self from new egg. not to mention its cheaper here than at
newegg. So I got your point no worries.
I should have worded it this way, my mistake. I want to be educated on the subject so in time, i know what im doing. ya know? Im sure everyone has had a point where they know nothing. And i do realize that when i get the money, new hardware will come out. I just want to relate to the average joe gamer out there. so i can understand what everything means. |

This site is my favorite site on the 'net for a beginner. If you are in earnest, and want to learn, log in, watch for the questions others ask, and read. Read sites like those mentioned above. Read Anandtech, Tweaktown, Fudzilla, daily tech, X-bit Labs, The Tech report, Digitimes... pretty much any site you can find on the 'net with a story or review about current tech. If you want to learn, you need to put in the effort. I am aware of no shortcuts. If you find one let me know, I would be happy to take it easy for a while.

I actually thought about building my own Rig; but I knew I was coming into an Inheritance; so I started looking around. It literally took me a few days of research to realize I would get the much better deal having DS build my rig than doing it myself. I mean if I put it together I get all the configuration headaches, no guarantee's on working parts, etc; rma's for bad parts. Having DSO build it for me; they test everything before its sent; so any bad hardware is replaced. Besides all that I know I have Lifetime Support and for the next 3 years I have a full warranty on parts and labor. So it was well worth it to me to have DSO build my Rig.
By the time I got my Inheritance; I knew exactly what build I wanted; and now I know Im set. I bought my Daughter a Nissan Coupe; and she dosent even get a Full 3yr warranty on everything. I look at it like I got the better deal. LOL.
