Build 192818
I'm impressed with DSO customer support but less so with the assembled product.
After a week of futile troubleshooting, I finally discovered that the fan on the GTX 280 GPU was inoperative causing the GPU to overheat.
Today, Randy assured me a new GPU would arrive in a couple of days.
When I first received the new system, I eagerly opened the case only to discover the GPU was flopping around attached by only a zip tie.Since no loose screws were located in the case it appears the GPU was never securly fastened. In addition, the attachment frame was bent, so I had to straighten it out before the GPU could be fastened to it.
Do the experts on this forum think the replacement of GPU is sufficient or has system longevity been compromised by repeated overheating lock-ups?
Thanks to a forum member for setting me on the right track by posting about HW monitors. Upon activating this resource, my GPU showed a core temperature of 106 degrees C (around 228 degrees Fahrenheit.

OK as far as the GPU fan, that happens from time to time and its the manufacturer but in all honesty when using PC parts this is a possibility and why manufacturers offer warranty, so that is not DS's fault and its under warranty.
its sounds like your PC was messed up during shipping, you could have sent it back to DS and have them fix what ever that was wrong, if you wanted to. as far as the GPU exchange, its right no the money, they send you one, you take the one they send you and put it in the place of the old one. as for the GPU being zip tied, I don't know what happened there, maybe they zip tie it so it does not move during shipping but it was knocked around during shipping and the GPU came out of the slot. |

Yes I appreciate the fact that DSO was very apologetic and immediately offered to replace the GPU. I only live a few 100 miles from DSO, so it couldn't have been such a traumatic shipping experience. Although anything is possible. The interior lighting switch was also flopping around in the case and it also appeared to never have been screwed in. In fact, the computer came with an unopened pack of 4 screws that I used to attach both the switch and the GPU.
I also noticed the SATA cable was pinched by the GPU but it only appears to be a superficial crease.
But again, what can 106 degrees do to the other components?
Thanks for the quick response.

if something was wrong, your PC would not work right, its all under warranty, so even if something did happen you are covered.
normally if the system thinks its too hot, it will shut itself down. some of the things you are describing sound like your box got knocked around during shipping. From what I have seen here, that does not sound like normal DS packaging. I'm sure they hate the fact that this has happened and are willing to make you happy and keep you happy. That is the good thing about DS, we all know things go wrong, but it does, DS does everything to make sure we are happy. Edited by DST4ME - 03 Nov 2008 at 9:53pm |

Keep us up to date, we like to know if at the end you are happy and would refer DS or not, every customer is important, so we all watch how the other person's case is handled, for example I'm waiting to get my PC, and if I see them not make a customer happy then I don't feel comfortable buying here, but so far I have not seen an unsatisfied customer around.

Just installed my new GPU that arrived this morning from DSO.....and the GPU fan is working. The temp remains at 40 degrees C for the GPU core. Later on I'll watch a blu-ray disc movie to make sure the card won't lock up anymore. Now I'm on my way to send the B.O. GPU back to DSO.
