My rig:

Digital Storm Custom Rig
Windows 10 64-bit
Intel Core i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz, 3401 Mhz,
BIOS American Megatrends 2001, 9/20/2010 19:13:52 Ver:08.00.10
Kaspersky Internet Security

Recently bought a WD My Book external HD, 6TB, model #WDBBGB0060HBK-NESN

I just started smelling something burning. Have cleaned the filters but it looks like one of the three fans at the bottom is not working (maybe the source of the smell?) but I can't seem to get to it to pull it out a replace. Is there a guide to how to get to this fan, pull it out and replace it?

Sorry about the issues. Does the pc start?

Which model DS do you have? there have been many changes through the years.
R&R a fan is pretty straight forward. Did you check the fan wires to make sure they are well connected? Haven't heard of a fan burning but ....

It's an old, custom made system from back in 2012. It's odd. I did notice that the wire connected to the front fan was disconnected, so all three fans do work. I narrowed the smell down to the fans coming from the CPU cooler, but the cooler seems to work fine, and the smell came immediately after turning the system on. No way was there enough time for anything to start overheating and burning. The cooler is old, admittedly. The original Corsair A50 unit, but after cleaning every filter and taking compressed air to everything, the smell seems to have gone away. Maybe I just let too much dust build up inside the rig.

Glad you got the fan working.
Keep your eye out on the system temps (HWMonitor) and keep the fins clean.

Enjoy.

Curious -- what should the temps be in a normal running system?

From what I have read it will throttle at 95C. From the Intel forum it tells 30C idle and 50-60C at max load. That sounds about right.
What are you getting?
