1. Around $1000-$1200, including a copy of Windows (cheaper is better)
2. I expect to use this computer for work and work only. I won't be doing any personal computing on it whatsoever and do not need excessive storage space.
3. I'll be using Solidworks doing 3D modeling and rendering (lots of rendering), and sending emails.
4. Has anyone ever ordered a computer from here with Quadro or FirePro cards? Would I be better off with a cross-fire solution with two cheaper cards or one single card solution? I probably won't be upgrading or tinkering with this system too much however I could see myself at some point upgrading the GPU(s).
Thank you for any and all help

I should have mentioned that I'm going to want to run dual monitors from this PC and am not sure how that works when running a 2 card set-up. I may want to just stick to one card. Lastly, the frowning face was supposed to be an exclamation point! |

I really can't think of a build at that budget that will have great performance for 3d rendering... Others might be able to chime in but at that budget it will be tough to get a rock solid system for that type of work.
My last system was roughly 1800$ and it struggled to render 3dMaxStudios. |

Your own config won't even work, your parts won't work together.
for work kinda apps, I don't believe sli even is supported. and again I'm no expert but I think you may need a bit more ram, not sure. I won't get into how much better the 2600k is. Edited by DST4ME - 23 May 2011 at 4:30pm |

You need to save up a bit. On your budget I wouldnt even be thinking about a quadro card, gaming cards have always worked great for me with personal work and Ive been in the film vfx industry for 6 plus years using maya, motionbuilder, lightwave, modo, zbrush, photoshop etc. At work we just got bumped up to the new quadro 5000's and the difference between it and my geforce 480 back in the states is negligible. Its pushing one dell 30" and a dell 24" by itself. DSTME is correct I have never heard of a 3d app utilizing sli.
You say you will be using this machine for work, but how heavy is the work? I ask because Im working in New Zealand currently and could not bring my beast with me, so I bought a cheaptastic toshiba laptop (freakin expensive over here! $2600 for a mid range!) to do some modeling on with a geforce 330, 6 gig ram, first gen i5 and I can get by, its quite painful at times but small models (100-200k polys) can be done. The main advantage of having a quadro is the support from the program makers for development uses. If it were me on your budget I would save up for at least a 2600k/8gigram/560. I know a very talented modeler who gets by with a 240, but he cant work on the really detailed stuff on it. Edited by JStones - 23 May 2011 at 8:31pm |
