First let me start by apologizing if this has already been discussed, I searched the boards but couldn't find it.

I am about to buy a new computer but I've always had this questing lingering in my head.  Is it better to buy a $2000 computer now, or a $1000 computer now and another new $1000 computer in a year or so?

Logic makes me think the latter but it's hard not to get all excited when perusing the options.  A $1000 computer should handle all current games with no problems, and should so for at least a year.  So in a year and a half I buy another new $1000 computer that is probably better than a $2000 computer on the market now.

Instead of buying a new $2000 computer every 3 years I buy a new $1000 computer every year and a half.

Thoughts?

If you're buying a $1000 dollar computer you're already more than one year behind what a $2000 dollar one would get you.

Graphics cards are always pretty expensive, and the top of the line cards frequently cost ~$500.

gtx 480 is 450$

good luck getting a computer under 1000$

a more reasonable price range is 1400-1500

Dusty is right a 1400-1500 price is more reasonable for a gaming computer. And i really doubt a 1000 dollar comp can run all current games good, but maybe if you try using a very very low res lol. My opinion is to go for the 2k comp, you wont have to upgrade much for 3 years, maybe just have to up the vid card

EVGA step up is just a thing they run in which you can "step up" the product you first bought to a better product in the first 90 days you buy it, i doubt he'd have any use for that

Thanks for the input guys.  I think I'm going to go with something around $1500.  I'm probably going to go with the base Maelstrom i7 930, upgrade to 6GB ram, and upgrade to the GTX470.  From the research I've done it looks like the GTX470 scales very well when you add a second card in SLI as long as you don't have bottle necking (hopefully the i7 930 and 6GB 1600 MHz won't bottleneck).  In a year or so when the price of the GTX470 drops significantly I can add a second one and get nearly double the graphics output of my current build.  That should keep me up and running current games for the next couple years.

I would suggest the HAF 922 for a budget build because the airflow in that thing is so much better than the maelstorm's. and to answer your questions no the 6g at 1600mhz wont bottleneck. For the gpu yea the 470 is ideal for you but i suggest just getting the higher end single vid card arther than adding another 470 because of heat issues youd end up having with the maelstorm if you are goign to get it but eitehr way getting a single higher end vid card would be better than sli'ing the 470 IMO

If you don't mind overclocking it, the GTX 470 will match, or beat any single card out there.
