Buying with no Operating System...

If I wanted to buy a desktop from here and install my own operating system, what disadvantages would I face by opting to not have an OS installed from Digital Storm?  The option on the configuration page states:
 
"No thanks.  Please test my memory.  I will be responsible for software-based support - $180".
 
Does this mean my hardware components aren't tested?  I understand no software will be loaded for the hardware, but how can DS confirm the installed hardware works?  Do they have a basic, preconfigured hard drive that they can use to test any system?  And before you ask, I like to install my own Operating System (from custom-made OS creations), which is why I am asking this question.  Thanks for any help and clarification!

What I'm guessing is that you'll have to install the OS (obviously) and the required drivers for the hardware you've selected with your custom system. Also, I'm not sure if it'll go through their stress testing, and I don't think they'll be able to run benchmark tools.

Though, you shouldn't take my word for it, as I don't know exactly what it is they do, but that's just my guess. Hope this helps. :)

Thanks for the reply Dave.  You would think someone from DS would have responded to this.  I didn't want to waste a phone call or send an official email when I could just make a post on here.

Any customer/potential customer that wishes for an official answer should contact us directly either via our toll-free number or send us a message using our message system.
 
Reason why is that we are focusing all of our resources to help customers that are calling us or sending us messages, and then, when we have a chance, our staff tries to help on the forums such as myself, Sarah, or Venom.
 
Now, to answer your question, we would simply plug in an OS hard drive, test the hardware, and unplug it.

DS does not provide support officialy on the forum.

if you don't provide the OS, they won't oc your system and such cause they can't test it.

thats from what I understand.

if you can plug a drive w/ an o/s in to test hardware, an o/c could be tested as well could it not?

Actually, yes, we can test overclocks, etc since we are plugging in an OS hard drive. But, not video card overclocks since they are done within Windows and not the BIOS like your processor/memory.

sorry for one more follow up question, but just had to ask, i'd assume the driver disks for the various hardware devices would come with the system, right?
 
i.e. the config i've been working on would include the x-fi fatality w/ front panel, so the driver disk that came with that device would be included in the box, correct? 
 
i'm considering purchase w/o o/s simply because despite the hassle, it's hard for me not to weigh the option since i've got a MSDN subscription

easytarget, that is what I want to do.  I work for the government and have access to the newest, latest software, so saving almost $200 just for an Operating System makes sense to me.  I figured it was a generic hard drive that they use to test a computer system.  Thanks for all the replies.

Yep, like I said, it's at least worth considering.
 
But I do need to know they send disks for the hardware installed, since I'll be loading the drivers myself. 
 
While I can track them down on the net, it'd be nice to know all the stuff that comes in the retail boxes for the components from the build arrives with the system.
 
That way at least I know i can get it up and running straight out of the box w/o playing hide and seek on the net.  When you get a new system, even one w/o an o/s, you'd like to think what's showing up will be (should be) sufficient nonetheless to get it up and running.  That's my expectation any way, and what I'm trying to confirm in this thread. easytarget, not sure about that one.  I know you normally get the DVD-based installation disk, but with no OS installed, you may only get the install disks for the various hardware components.

@ Venom.  I'm in the military.  I have hook-ups for all the software that is run on government computers.  We get test samples all the time, and making a quick copy of a software disk is the norm.  All government computers are running XP, and if Windows 7 proves to be as stable as it seems, I see the military rolling over to W7 within the next year.
