Topic: Can't Decide Between CoolerMasterV8 or Corsair H50 Posted: 12 Apr 2010 at 7:41pm |
Hey, I'm sorta at a tough cpu cooling decision right now. I currently have a stock intel cooler, and originally considered DIY-LC before I realized the costs and actual effectiveness of it. Right now I'm debating whether to get a Cooler Master V8 or a Corsair H50. The thing with the V8 that I think actually allows it to match up to the Corsair H50's self-contained LC system is my specific situation. The V8 will essentially mount at a horizontal angle on my mobo, because of my case's special modification to the mobo tray so that it's 90 degrees to the right (boosts air cooling effectiveness, rising heat concept). Anyways, this will put the V8 in such a position that it will exhaust air directly at my main top mounted 120mm exhaust fan. Since the V8 uses heatpipes in the process, would this then be more effective than that of a Corsair H50? The H50 would attach to the top mounted fan anyways.

Why limit yourself to 2 crappy coolers? for $60.00 get a Cogage Arrow

Cogage Arrow -> 147x123x160mm
V8 -> 120x120x158mm The v8 is still smaller, if only by 2mm |

ablahblah you are on the forums a lot and I'm sure you heard everyone loving the noctua coolers. Why aren't you considering them? Seriously the build quality to those coolers is great. When you hold the noctua fans, I feel as though, the fans are better quality then a lot of others I have had.
Oh and something people don't talk about often but that is really important is the mounting hardware and thermal compound. Noctua makes it really easy with mounting method (seriously watch different coolers getting installed on youtube). The thermal compound may not rank #1 but everywhere I have read it is very quality (that's 1 less thing to buy).
What mobo do you have? If you have the 3x sli get the NH-U12P if you have any other get the NH-D14 (of course check you case for size too). If those won't fit noctua has a baby NH-U12P that uses 92mm fans and I'm betting that one gotta fit the raven.
I guess the true 120 supposed to be good to if you don't wanna go noctua.
EDIT: I actually have seen people reporting getting high overclocks and good temps with a push pull and the corsair h50. However for reasons that DST4ME and Justin have stated I just don't like the sef contained H2O units. Also you aren't getting near the performance to justify a future leak (though I know that is very unlikely to ever happen). Edited by AndydViking - 12 Apr 2010 at 8:24pm |

yesh, I've been on a forums A LOT, as I've noticed xD
my mobo's a XFX X58i (it was on sale and I was on a budget, alright??? LOL), and it's 3x SLI, yesh. I THINK a NH-U12P will fit, but the color scheme is somewhat part of the criteria for me, heh, I'm not really a big fan of the tan, and I'm more for black/blue atm. Then again, I can always swap out the fan, right? 54 CFM isn't as efficient as I've seen on the market, heh, seen 72 CFMs for the same dBa. What's so bad about pre-assembled LC units though? I think I might actually be able to get a decent overclock with the H50, already have 0.77 boost with stock lol. Edited by ablahblah - 12 Apr 2010 at 8:41pm |

remember CFM ratings are bogus, most fans will not meet the rating, and some fall way short, but even if they did meet the rating, that is on free air, not through a heat sink.. That requires greater static pressure, that is why some fans with a lower CFM rating will out-perform ones with a higher CFM rating.
The Noctuas are good, no question about it. but for $60 I would get the cocage, for $69.00 I would get the Thermalright Venomous X.
The Corsair H50 would do fine also, just more $ for less performance is all, and you lose out of the cooling effect that the air cooler provides over the VRM,s Northbridge, and RAM.

hey, the cocage arrow is really just a dual venomous x with an arrow shape, right? if so, then y does the venomous x cost more?

Oh yeah darn that ven X cooler looks nice. I still gotta put my DS PC back together and that may be just the cooler to go on it when I do.
This review has it outperforming the NH-U12P by 5*C with 3.5 OC and only a couple behind the NH-D14 the ven X is using noctua fans as well in this review). http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1215/5/
@ahblahblah you could put any color fan on this you want and not have to deal with the ugly noctuas lol. I like the Noctua colors though as I think it's cool they wanted to stick out like that. It looks nice with its pre-lapped base.

any clue on how the ven X compares to the cocage arrow though, since they're essentially the same concept?

IMHO I'd still go venx for it's great performance and smaller size (judging by just these reviews) Edited by AndydViking - 12 Apr 2010 at 9:29pm |

sooo the Ven X is essentially its equivalent, despite the arrow having a ton more dissipation area? o_o

Ven X beats V8 apparantly.
Oh and, I stand corrected about LC Oh, and what do you think of this fan for a heatsink? http://www.frozencpu.com/products/9303/fan-575/Cooler_Master_R4_Series_120x25mm_Super_Silent_Fan_-_Blue_LED_-_R4-L2R-20AC-GP.html 19 dBa and it's still able to chunk out near 3mm H20 static pressure and 69 CFM. Or would this one be better? http://www.frozencpu.com/products/9303/fan-575/Cooler_Master_R4_Series_120x25mm_Super_Silent_Fan_-_Blue_LED_-_R4-L2R-20AC-GP.html It supports 4 pin PWM, should be able to take mobo PWM speed signals i guess, rather than going at full speed all the time. pretty much all mid range and up cooler beat the crapmaster.
That review is using the Noctua fans on the thermalright? lol no wonder the temps look like crap.
the fan you posted the link to, is ok, but if you are going to get something like the venomous x, get a lot more fan, it will be needed to push through the tight fins, preferably 2. lol

Why did you say this? You don't like the noctua fans or they just don't have the static pressure for the ven X cooler?

oh, and the reason behind the fans I picked were because of my original purpose for a new cooler...which I just noticed I completely forgot to list...I wanted a new cooler because I wanted a better overclock, but also mainly so I could quiet down the crap CPU cooler I have right now. 19 dBa for that static pressure is pretty awesome to me.

oh, so what would work best with a Ven X then?
and also, um, you are taking into mind that I'll be mounting the thing sideways compared to horizontally on conventional mobo mounts, so the fans are really facing up, right? I'm guessing it won't be facing any sort of issue with heat-induced rising of air, heck, that rising will be helping it along through the heatsink lol (there's also an absence of horizontally mounted fans that can interfere with this effect) |
