Hi gents, first post, thanks for your hospitality.

Today a DS sales guy helped me put together a very wicked Intel-based gaming system which I intend to buy later this week.

The problem is, the saved specs stated liquid cooling, H2O Stage 3 High Performance Liquid chilled frostbite system for CPU only when I think I remember the guy reccomending the Stage 2 Air option, Cooler Master V8, compatible with the i7 chip.  So I changed it.  As you can see from the specs below, it appears the latter option is required with the CPU overclock.  I'll check in with DS again tomorrow to clarify, but which option do you think makes more sense?  I do not game 24/7 but it gets very warm in my ventilated but not air-conditioned home office in LA.  My hunch is that we settled on the Air but I'm not 100% sure...

Many thanks in anticipation.

LC on CPU is always a good idea.

that system is not the best bang for your buck, you got a ticket number for that build? if you ever plan to upgrade this system you will need to up your PSU, raiding 2 HDDs is not a great idea specially for somebody who does not game too much.

what is your resolution? and why waste money on a 285 when a 275 cost less and is only like 4 fps less which is something you won't even notice, of course that depends on your resolution, so what is your resolution?

Edit: DST4ME I took most of your advice and changed my specs, thank you.  See separate post if interested.

Ticket # 278049

I did not want to give the impression that it's not primarily a gaming machine; it is.  I am away from it during the weekdays, however, which means that the GPU will not be stressed 24/7.

Resolution will be the best offered by 22" or 24" LCD monitor suitable for gaming.  Sorry not to be more specific but this will be my first LCD monitor and I need to do my homework.

I understand PSU upgrade argument.  The DS rep recommended both the 285 and the RAID config, which I was a little dubious about myself but, as I say it is a gaming rig.

Looks like I'll need to get a second opinion from DS.  I'd like to buy it this week before wife suggests I do something more "sensible" with the money.  All suggestions welcome.

raid is a waste and so is the 285.

if you want to pay $211 more for 4fps then go ahead, but with all do respect, you would be a sucker to do so.

instead of raid, which does not help your seektime, just go with a 500GB now and by the end of the year invest in a ssd which should be faster or have better prices and will smoke the raid that was suggested.

if you want the best for your money this is it:

here you go Ticket# 278323 --- Price: $2194 (To see this build click here) Price after current promotion $2094

you decide if you want the best for your money or you want to waste your money, think about it, with a 750w psu and a 285, you can't upgrade the gpu anymore cause your psu can't handle it.

Well, DST, I made most of the changes you suggest, advised by Sarah of DS.  I got the 1000W PSU and swapped out the RAID for 2 50GB HDDS un-RAIDED.  Sorry but Sarah figured I should stick with the 285, maybe you're right and I'm an idiot.  However, my final specs are pretty close to yours but I cannot get down to your bottom line because I'd be a real idiot not to watercool the CPU.  I live in a naturally ventilated house in L.A. and it can be 90 degrees in here for about 14-20 days a year.  I'm won't be gaming on the new rig on weekday -- the PC won't even be switched on -- so water-cooling the GPU is not necessary IMO.

I can't believe what people were getting excited about the last time I bought a gaming rig: the Ati 9800 was state of the art and 1GB of RAM was sheer indulgence.
