Can't validate code key from external CD drive

   Good morning,

I have some software that installs to the PC but only functions fully when the CD is present in the drive. It functions perfectly if utilized on a desktop or laptop with a dedicated CD drive. When I use it on a laptop or desktop with NO built-in CD drive, it can see the CD, but gives an error that it can't read the "key" on the CD. It runs and installs the software fine, the issue seems to only be in validating this key. Any thoughts?
