I'm on the 1st gen bolt (with the 500w gold psu), it's been five years and I'm still very happy with it. I'm wondering if this psu is ok for a rtx 2080?

I ran a 780 Ti with its 250W TDP in my Bolt 1 for years and the only issue was the fan noise on the PSU.

Per what I've seen, the 2080's TDP will range from 215 to 225W (with the Ti at 250W), so less than the 780 Ti (aside from the 2080 Ti).

I would think it would be a close call.   650 watt is the recommended but Bolt has always got away with less, probably because of less fans, smaller mobo.....

I remember Tidgxor’s fan noise issue.

I might be wrong but not being a new psu, has it lost a bit of headroom? Confused

A good quality psu, like a gold rated with its better caps, etc has less chance of giving problems as it ages.     Capacity doesn’t diminish, just whether it can take heavy loads over longer periods without faulting out.

If the pc starts crashing, restarting, then the psu might be crowbarring.

Wow, I could have swore I typed a third part to my response. Jeesh, I am getting senile. LOL

What I had thought I had typed was basically what bprat said, except he did so more intelligently. Big%20Smile

I am honestly not sure I would do it, however I do think it would work, it's just going to be loud - very loud.

Thanks guys! I have a follow-up question:
If I'm going to use a separate psu for the graphics card only, is it doable? If so, is a 400w psu sufficient for that purpose?

It’s doable. The RTX2080 requires about 250-265 watt, so you should be good.

Keep in mind, a pc psu needs to have 2 pins in the 24 pin output shorted together to turn it on. Just plugging it in doesn’t work.

You can just hook up a switch across 2 wire adapter that plugs into the 24 pin cable, or there are 2x 24 pin cable adapters with a 3rd cable with shorted plug that connects both psu together to turn on together when power on switch is pressed.

From what i saw 650 watt is recommended but it all depends on the rest of your hardware too like what cpu, how many fans/cooling, hdd etc.
