Hi,
I need a computer to keep in my family room by my tv (sort of like an HTPC). It needs to have a small footprint...to appease the wife. I'm really liking what I'm seeing with the BOLT. But can it handle the most intense games? I watched that review video but I'm curious about.... FAR CRY 3 --- max settings other graphics intensive games... I will be playing on a 55" LCD TV, native resolution 1920x1080. Far Cry 3 is a beast of a game...would I get butter smooth gameplay with the bolt? Should I bump up to the nvidia gtx 680 4gb or the 690? ****Also, any chance you guys at DS test your preconfig systems on a sampling of the latest games to give us comsumers some idea of the FPS you are getting? Say at 1920x1080 res, or 5760x1200 res?. And then post that info with your builds. THANKS! |

Hi belaflek73.... A Bolt lvl 3 or 4 will give you high to max gaming on a 1920x1080 monitor with most games. Some games like Crysis warhead, Metro2033, etc would need the game settings dropped a bit. To get Ultra everything and 60 fps always, a sli setup is needed. A gtx 670 with just a few settings dropped a bit will give smooth gaming with little difference in eye-candy. I have a gtx 560 and with Far Cry3 set for High, the fps are 40s. The gtx 670 is almost double my gtx 560. Ultra might be a stretch for 670 or 680 and keeping fps high. Not sure though.

Please note, the GTX 690 will not work in the Bolt. If you want the fastest graphics card for the Bolt, go with the GTX TITAN.

Go with the titan. That thing will get you high FPS at max settings in pretty much every game but Crysis 3 (very high settings at good frames, but not completely maxed out). Crysis 3, like Crysis 1, probably won't be "max outable" by a one card setup for at least another generation or two of cards.

For 1900 x 1200 res all you need is sli 670 as bp22 said, anything else is pretty much waste of money cause you won't see the difference, 670 sli I'm pretty sure matches titan's performance for much less of a price.

Right, just the one. The mini mobo only has a single Pciex16 slot for a graphic card.
Sli gtx 670 beats a single Titan for less money, but you'd need a bigger case with mobo to match.

I see a 690 in the Bolt configurator. Is there really no way to get it in? If it can't be put in, what's holding it back: its size, cooling or PSU. I've read an article on the verge which said there was work on getting a 700W PSU in place and making the Bolt 690 friendly.

My guess, and DS would know for sure, is that the 690 in the Bolt is less about the power requirements and more about case cooling. Most cards out there, like gtx670, 680 and the Titan draw air into the front mounted fan, pass it over the gpu heatsink and exhausts the heat out the back of the case. The 690 has two gpu's, with a radial fan in-between. The fan pulls air in and passes half of it over the back heatsink and out the back and the other half over the front heatsink and the heat dumps directly into the case. The 690 needs a larger case for the airflow needed to dissipate the heat.
I would think the Bolt would need to be redesigned with more side vents and fans to keep it cool with a 690. But, Alex, if he sees this, might have a better explanation. |

Bingo. ![]() Dual-GPU boards have always been, and likely will remain, heat monstrosities. |

The GTX 690 is only in the configurator because our configurator lists all choices possible for all of our customers. Our team verifies each order and would have notified the customer that we cannot build the Bolt with a GTX 690.
