Budget:
1500 Expectations: I am constantly traveling with my job up to two weeks a month. I currently haul my 22" with my small factory form desktop around with me. So I need something that is transportable and can endure the road travel. I'm not sure if water cooling would pose a problem in this area, feedback would be awesome! Also, the only reason I would buy a PC over building one myself is if Digital Storm had a one stop shop for driver upgrades. It is very frustrating in the past building a PC only to have the mother board discontinued and drivers no longer released. The biggest problem I found was when I upgraded to Windows 7, so just some feedback on whether or not Digital Storm has a one stop driver update shop or if you have to do the traditional painful task of searching high and low for your driver updates. (Video driver updates are not painful so no problem there, mainly mother board and sound devices.) Usage: Heavy use on the road, constant transportation. Used for next-gen MMOs such as Rift, occasional LAN party use with the latest and greatest FPS. If anyone has been in the Rift beta and had very high FPS please let me know your system setup. Special Needs: See above, need a sturdy machine thats transportable, doesn't have to be tiny. Also, laptops are out, I'm a desktop guy for upgrading. Saved Ticket #: Open to all configs Specifications: 3 GHZ + Processor - Dual or Quad Core (not sure if Rift takes advantage of multi-cores), I currently own a ATI 5850, so crossfire would be nice to add to a system that already has one, 4gb or more RAM with low clocks, water or air cooling depending on feedback on transportation issue. Get an Enix/FT03, which is a small micro ATX form factor case, and put a H70 on it so it doesnt get bumped around too much. A tower cooler that's air powered would fit, but i dunno whether it'd be too safe to move around.
$1500 is pushing it though, this is the best i can get, borderline tolerable gaming rig. Well, casewise it is your choice, here's the specs for both.
Enix/FT03 Dimensions - 9.25 (W) x 19.17 (H) x 11.18 (D) inches Total volume - 1982.46555 cubic inches Motherboard form factor - M-ATX HAF 922 Dimensions - 10.0 (W) x 19.7 (H) x 22.2 (D) inches Total volume - 4373.4 cubic inches Motherboard form factor - Standard ATX Throwing in a third, Non-DS option that's very movement/LAN party ready if you want to consider special requests. Silverstone Sugo 4 (SST-SG04B-FH Model comes with a large, top mounted carrying handle) Dimensions - 7.87 (W) x 16.42 (H) x 13.66 (D) Total Volume - ~1765.22 cubic inches Motherboard form factor - M-ATX As the enix wasn't designed with full ATX boards in mind, it was made definitely smaller than an ATX case; it turns out less than half the volume of the 922. Should make for an easy case to transport around, albeit there is no carrying handle. The 922 is a rock solid case though, and has better features than the Enix, but i don't know whether it was really intended to be moved around like a SFF case is meant to be. For the cooler, I have no complaints against the effectiveness of tower coolers and I'm aware that All in one LC systems such as the Corsair H70 are close to if not as effective as tower air coolers, but the fact that he mentioned that he would be moving this system around a lot has me on edge. I think that the H70 in this case would be a better choice however, as having a regular tower cooler like the Noctua u12P involves a 158mm tall, 940g piece of heatsink sitting on the motherboard and looming off the side of it. The H70 would distribute its weight across two points, the lighter pump/waterblock hugging the motherboard and the heavier radiator hardpointed to the case itself. Thanks for all the great feedback, the only question I have is for the water cooling, if I left the PC in my car on a cold day, would freezing temperatures bust the lines? I really like the optional SilverStone case, that carrying handle would be great!

Optional involves you custom requesting it from DS. DS will do it, just incurs some fees; email them to get more info i guess.
For water cooling, it might possibly bust the lines, might not depending on the fluid and stretchability of the tubing I guess? Going to wait for justin to chime in here if he can. |
